Rack and Pinion Replacement

So, my steering rack has been leaking slowly for awhile now (I know, should have taken care of it sooner). Last week it finally decided to tell me it had had it and started leaking so much that I had to refill my reservoir daily. In hopes of not having to replace the entire rack itself, I decided to do a little investigating with the bushings at the end of the rack and sure enough, the contamination hadn't made it past the oil seals and it was as simple as replacing the pressed bushing with o-rings on it. Here's a picture of the little plastic ring that could have resulted in a $1300 rack replacement job if I would have taken it to a shop.

Moral of the story: consider doing a bit of research in the factory service manual if you're even slightly mechanically inclined. I bought the pressed bushing from mitsubishipartswarehouse.com for less than $20. Even with a specialty alignment because my car is lowered, I'm at less than $200 in total for the repair.

Thanks! I'll probably throw together a write up later this week for the tie rods and mention more specifically what I did with the bushings/seals. Frankly, I found that even a brand new OEM inner tie rod boot (the source of the problem originally) is very hard and plastic-y. I can't imagine them being very durable over time. I also bought a Beck Arnley replacement boot and it seems much higher quality.
