Poor and Powerful Idle.

Ive noticed that sometimes My car will roll back when on a steep incline at a stop sign, and other times it will hold itself in position at the same stop sign.

I first thought it was temperature related but that doesn't seem to be the case, anyone else with auto tranny notice this?

From rolling back, this is a malfunction.
There could be two faults.
1) Low oil pressure.
A) the Wear of the oil pump.
B) the Oil loses its properties.
C) high oil temperature, it becomes too liquid.
2)Wear of clutches in the packs. Clutches become thinner and can't hold the weight of the car.
The first thing I will recommend you. Replace oil. To set the correct oil level.

I can tell when this happens. The engine and transmission are fully warmed up. While the oil in the transmission is cold this effect does not occur. So I wrote to you a possible reason. You need to come to a specialty service on the transmission. There you may measure the pressure in the system. This is done with a pressure gauge (manometer). After that, it will be clear what to do next.
PS So you need to check the operation of the heat exchanger. If there are problems, the oil will be very hot and liquid.

I don't think we have a transmission fluid pressure sensor in our vehicles so you wouldn't get a SES light for that. There *is* a temperature sensor for it, but it doesn't trigger a SES light. That sensor only causes your "shift indicator light" (just the little circle with the gear you're in on your gauge cluster) to flash when the transmission fluid exceeds 115C (238F).

So like Stayer said, it's probably a combination of the oil not being quite warm enough/too warm combined with wear on the clutch packs. Automatic transmissions are very sensitive to small differences like these, after all.

Auto tranny has no oil pressure switch. To measure pressure it is necessary to unscrew the two screws on 10mm, and connect the pressure gauge. In the service maintenance of the transmission know how to do it.

ok so tested it today. Warm start up, drove 1000ft, wouldnt idle up hill. Later on, warm start up, drove same distance, would hold in place just fine.

Noticed the temp gauge was same on both tests. ambient temp difference of about 10 degrees.
