I just bought a 2008 Eclipse (love it) and I have a couple of questions. The peg on the temperature gauge is always midway ( 1/2 way ) is that normal ? My other question is, I bought this car off a lot,it has 36000 miles should I have the valves checked or hope all the maint. has been done. Thanks for your help.

yea your temp gauge is fine. Like it slowly climbs up to that point after you have the car on after a few minutes? Also depending on where you bought the vehicle all of the maintenance should have been checked. The only thing id recommend to do would be to check all of the fluid under the hood, make sure everything's topped off. Your only at 36k but when you get to 60k you'll probably have to change your serpentine belt and some other things.

WTTC! You can find links to the service and repair manual in here by searching. It has all the info you will need for maintaining a stock vehicle. At 60k the timing belt needs to be replaced....this is crucial...we have what is called an interference motor...the valves go into the cylinder further down than the highest point that the piston comes up....if the belt brakes...valves hit piston....not pretty nor cheap.

You should be able to go into any Mitsu dealership and request a maintenance history. If the valve lash check is not in the maintenance history... get it done!! If it has not been done you'll start to lose performance and can run into problems down the road.
But you GS guys correct if I'm wrong, I thought the valve lash check was for the GT Intake side only, and the GS didn't require this check? These are dependable cars as long as you keep up the scheduled maintenance. Sounds like you were looking in your Owners Manual / Scheduled Maintenance booklets. My rule of thumb when I buy a used car, if I can't prove the scheduled maintenance was perform, then I get it done. Scheduled Maintenance, starts on page 00-45: http://tearstone.com/eclipsefsm/2006...0000100-00.pdf

Timing Belt Replacement Interval
Quote:
"Timing belt, replace, Every 96,000 km (60,000 miles). NOTE: Replace the timing belt at every 168,000 km (105,000 miles) when it has not been replaced at the first 96,000 km (60,000 miles). Would someone interpret this for me? Read literally, it says to replace the timing belt at 60K but if you don't do that then replace it at 105K. If it is okay to replace it at 105K, why would you replace it at 60K? |

Our inlines need this every so often. Intake and exhaust side. Its a DIY-able job but it really is a pain.
