3rd Cat removal?
I've been looking for answers to this question but couldnt find any for the questions I had
I have an auto GS eclipse with an Injen SRI and a Magnaflow Cat back I just wanted to know the pros and cons of removing the 3rd cat because I noticed it doesnt do much besides restrict airflow.I have stock headers so I still have those two Cats up there and I was wondering if Id still pass emissions tests. |

yes it does restrict airflow ! i pass emissions no problem without it here in tn where they are strict.again, refer to rre's dyno sheet if you dont think its restrictive.

If they do a visual inspection like they do in Cali you will not pass.

just to be nit-picky - the stock exhaust manifolds are not technically headers. just FYI.

the stock manifold has 2 cats in it the 3rd cat is after the resonator closer to the rear of the car.

without any other mods like a header, intake or different muffler you wont notice any power increase from just getting the 3rd cat removed.

Anything that decreases restriction of air flow is going to improve performance because right now the cat is choking our engine. That's what makes RRE headers so desirable... it removes the 2 cats. It will also help a bit with gas mileage.

I have an interchangeable rear cat and racing cat....the factory cat does hold you back. Put a racing cat on there to pass a visual inspection but if they put one of those anal probes up your rear for emissions you are going to need a real cat for that. That is why I have the two that I can swap back and forth. The real one for the week of inspection and right back to the racing cat for the other 51 weeks

Lol bump I know... but I have the mods in my sig...
If I remove the cat and... A.) Get straight piping straight to the back, no muffler, would it 1.) Reduce torque because of down pressure loss? 2.) Sound much deeper/higher? 3.) Crackle like ford trucks do without a muffler? B.) Straight piping to the back, Magnaflow RRE muffler, would it 1.) be a better solution than A? C.) Replace cat with a "High flow" cat and attach/ detach a magnaflow RRE. Which one of those would give me the highest gain in torque (preferrably) and/or HP? Sorry, I just wanna know EVERYTHING before I do it, and why.

i have the high flow cat to magnaflow cat-back. it may not b the best for gains (its close) but its definately in my opinion best for sound. VERY deep and smoothe
