muffler bolts w/springs?
Ok I searched and couldn't find anyone who did what I did so my question is-
The bolts and springs that hold the muffler to the exhaust pipes, are they necessary? I was getting some ratting from the muffler and a friend of my club said its my spring and advised me to remove them so i did and put some new bolts with some nuts to keep it tight. Then today (only 2 days later) and I was talking to a mechanic friend and he told me I need the springs to deal with the flexing of the pipe to the muffler when the engine revs and without them the bolts could snap off...so ya anyone heard or have this problem? I should say this is with the stock muffler and piping. |

Yea I was told the same thing by a muffler shop when I had them inspect the rattle but in my case, I had the RRE axleback at the time on the stock pipe flange. The springs were useless because they couldn't cover the gap and would just rattle.
If the newer bolts can clamp down tighter than the previous ones, then you should try to put back the springs.

I would think that the springs would cut down on unwanted vibrations too.

i think all the way back at the muffler probably doesnt matter as much... where you really need them is where the cat connects to the midpipe

I don't think its necessary, in old days no exhaust systems had those stupid springs and all was fine. and to reduce vibrations and cracking problems all exhaust systems are hanging on some sort of rubber hangers.
