How To: Install Load Resistors to LED Tail Lights (To get rid off TCL OFF light)

There have been many reports that after installing new LED Tail Lights that the driver may see a TCL OFF light appear on their dashboard. This is your Traction Control, basically what helps you when pulling off in rain/snow. Some drivers have also mentioned that when this light is on, their cruise control shuts off.

Usually the light only appears after around 10 minutes of driving. When you shut your car off & restart, the light does not appear, but will re-appear once you start driving again.

(If your light constantly stays on no matter what, I would suggest having it checked it by the dealership or someone familiar with Mitsubishi cars.)

The reason this light is appearing is due to the way Mitsubishi cars are wired. Everything is integrated with each other. So when the car’s computer notices that the brake lights are not getting enough power, it ends up activating this light.

What you need to do is hook up a load resistor to each tail light. This will basically “fool” the computer to think that it is getting the same amount of power that the stock tail light’s received.
______________________________________

For installation remove your tail lights from the car, but do no disconnect the wires or anything. You just need to have access to the wires.

You will need to have 2 Load Resistors. I picked mine up from a local Auto Zone. 2 of them came in one package as seen below.

You will need to use the dual-splice connectors that come with it (if they don’t come with it, don’t worry, it’s really cheap) & connect the resistor to the brake wire & ground wire.

• Brake wire is the red wire coming from the tail light.
• Ground wire is the black wire coming from the tail light.
• Green wire goes to the lights that come on when you turn on your headlights.

In each of the dual splices will be the black wire that comes from the resistor & wires mentioned above.

There is a metal piece in the middle of the splicers. They must be really pushed in with a set of pliers in order to cut into the wire and actually splice.

You will need to position this as close to the tail light as you can (in terms of how far you go up the wire), but leaving room so that you can position the resistor in a way that wont touch anything else.

THE RESISTOR DOES GET WARM/HOT! So use whatever method you can to secure the resistor without touching anything plastic or any wires. (I personally used some zip ties to secure the wires back and let the resistor hang in the air by itself.)

That’s all there is to it!

Thx

I actually just realized a bunch of typos I made lol. I'll fix it later when I'm at a computer (on my phone now). Wrote all that & made the graphic while working on a bunch of other things at the job earlier lol.

Thanks for the awesome write up. That was actually one of the reasons I haven't gotten the aftermarket tail lights yet. Has this fixed your problem 100%?

Yea, I have had these in for a week now & the light has not appeared. Everything works like normal. Quick $10 fix.

I suppose that's not too bad considering they are packaged for this application...

If anyone wonders though you can get the resistors for just over $1 a piece...less if you buy 25 or more...

Glad to hear that it's working for everyone else as well. You can really thank Joe over at Auto City Imports, lol, he gave me the idea because he heard of a similar issue on the Lancers. I guess I was just the test dummy to see if it would work on our cars as well, lol.

I just did this today, and I have a few comments.

I found everything at radioshack. I used a 20w 8 ohm resistor. I searched for days and couldn't find a kit. Every auto parts store thought I was crazy hahaha. They acted like I was looking for a bag of wizardry.

So I wired my everything to your diagram, and I discovered that you have your wired crossed. The solid green wire is supposed to go to the green/silver wire, and the red wire is supposed to the green/yellow wire. everything else was correct.

Has no one else tried this?

I just found the exact same ones pictures in the OP at Autozone. The people there weren't sure but they pointed me to the electrical aisle. I found them because of this post with that picture. Then they wanted to know what it was for and I gave a shout out to club4g.org. Thanks JDub!!! This website is awesome!!! I would have never known there was an issue with these tail lights if it weren't for this thread and how to fix it.

^^ Glad to be of help

...and to those who are wondering, I have had these on my car for almost a year now, no issues at all. So the resistors definitely work. If your TCL light happens to come on again, it may have to do with another problem. (For example, I just installed a new double-din last week, and I hooked up 1 wire wrong, and BAM.... TCL light was on after that. The damn ECU system in our cars are very sensitive.)

So I did this while doing my install and the cruise control still doesn't work and the TCL and swerve symbol are on. WTF??? I've never used those types of splicers so maybe I didn't do it right. Will check it out tomorrow when it's daylight. And I thought I was smart for doing this during the initial install. Grrrrrrr.

Ok so I fixed the problem. There is a metal piece in the middle of the splicers. They must be really pushed in with a set of pliers in order to cut into the wire and actually splice. I just pushed them together at first with my fingers until the clicked into place. JDub will you add this to the OP for people like me that don't know anything about electricity and splicing. After reconnecting the car battery everything was back to normal. Cruise control and all worked again!!!

Yea sure, I will add that. Although, I could have sworn it said that in the instructions of the resistor pack, hehe

For anyone else with this question this is what I did...ignore the wiring I'm no electrician.

I made a heat-shield-sushi with some insulator material I was using for my hood.

Anyone have a problem where the car runs like complete crap after installing the resistor?

I installed the same resister from autozone as originally posted. After completed install cruise and TCL all work fine now but now the car revs real high and has no power whats so ever.
I take resister off the car runs fine. but TCL and cruise do not work.

I do have the wires tapped in correctly Red/Black on resistor. Ugh!

Nope! Mine is running like a champ...that sounds like a question for some one smarter than me, but I thought I'd reassure you that I haven't had any problems like that with mine. Sure it's not just you stressing out? I've heard perfectionist complain after every mod they do that something feels different...Just say'n.

yea I know its not just a mod feel.

The RPM guage revs up to 5-6K and the car moves like a snail I timed 45-50 seconds to get up to 60 MPH. It feels almost like being in 6th gear when you should be in 1st taking off. Literally have to be pedal to the medal to even *crawl* up to 60-70.
