Speaker Size

Hello gents and ladies I'm new to the site and was wondering if someone could tell me if aftermarket speakers have to be the exact same size as the ones being replaced, Ive got a 2012 Eclipse GTP with the premium RF sound system but I'm planning on changing it, I was looking to get Alpine Type R 6 1/2 inch component speakers for the front, and matching 6.5 inch two way speakers in the back and twin shallow mount 10 inch subs in the back some how, of course new HU and amps at a later time. Will the speakers fit even if there a smidge larger than existing speakers diameter wise that is

MFTK, Please give the young lady a little more info if you are going to reply at all.

Type R's are a great speaker. the component set should come with adapters for 5x7 and possibly 6x9 but I would check alpines website to confirm this. The rear 6.5 coax will fit fine.

If you have the Rockford Fosgate system it has 6.5" speakers. If you do not they are 6x9

If you plan on buying subwoofers you HAVE to have an amplifier. It cannot run on a head unit alone, as you mentioned you would buy an amp after the fact.

In my opinion you are buying high quality speakers (especially the type r) they are the second highest power rated speakers in alpines lineup (next to the type x)

Amplifying your speakers is HIGHLY recommended! purchase a 4 channel amp for your speakers. you won't regret it. Its $$$ but well worth it.

If you don't it would be like buying a turbo kit for your car, but never tuning it. Your car or in your case speakers, never reach their full potential, and you just wasted your money.

Hope this helps. PM me if you have any other questions.

I just installed the SPR-60 and SPR-60C in my car and had the Premium system. You will have to fab a mount for the front speakers. The Premium system has 5.5 in the front and the mounting plate fills a 6X9 hole. The speaker/mounting plate is one piece. I took a coping saw and removed the old speaker from the plate by cutting the cones out and with a little work made the mounting plates form the carcass of the original speakers.

yeah but crutchfield is not reliable as they don't do the difference between RF and Non RF. it would be bad information and lord knows she would order 6.5 and realize later she needed 6x9

Gentlemen thank you all for your input. Firstly Tracey is a Mr not a Mrs lol my parents named me before I came out ooops. MFTK thanks for the thorough response. My audio upgrade will be done in stages and the first stage is to change the front and back speakers, while maintaining the original HU and RF amp and Sub. I have plans on a JL Audio 5 channel amp, which is rated at 100W x4 and 500W for the sub/s. My original question stemmed from the sticky thread in this forum concerning the speaker size, which is listed as 6.25 inches, while the Alpine speakers are listed at 6.5 inches I didn't want to have to shoe horn em in there, but Crutchfield did list them as compatible, I am considering either the Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH when it comes for sale or the Alpine INA-W910. I had considered the top of the line Kennwood HU because of the Garmin navigation but I don't think I can live with the screen lag or its other eccentricities. I would love to run twin 8 inch shallow mount subs in the back but only if a customization kit is available to mount them on the side walls of the back, I cant afford to sacrifice all my hatchback space, and if I can run both off the single channel supplied by the JL amp. Kenwood does make 8 inch subs which should fit nicely. Your comments and experience on this would be invaluable thanks. Oh BTW i posted pics of my girl in my personal album
