How can I "host" my own website? godaddy is expensive for a year of hosting, anyway i can host it myself?

i just found a how to. seems stupid to pay for hosting when you can just do it yourself. anyway sorry for the thread, just thought someone had some insight. thanks

You can install apache on your computer and host a website from there. That is fine for a small site but for bigger sites where you need more bandwidth is where paid for hosts come into the picture.
Another thing is unless you have a static ip, your ip will change so you cant use that to connect to your computer. Go to no-ip.com and download the program from there and get a redirect (ex. mattman.no-ip.com) and when you install the program, it will automatically update it so you can just use mattman.no-ip.com to connect to the site. You can also get a domain from godaddy for cheap (seen them as cheap as $5/year). |

I host all of my domains on DreamHost, and I am pretty happy with them.
Most importantly, before you choose a webhost research them first. The sweetness of price is faded long past the bitterness of poor service.

thanks for the info. i have 3 domains, and about to get a new one. im paying $5 a month for hosting, i think a total of 10-15 a month per site, to include domain email and hosting.
dreamhost...never heard of them. ill check them out, thanks.

If it's a commercial business you can't just host it from your home using your residential internet connection. You can but it's illegal. godaddy has been a good host for many of my sites. Stay away from iPower at all costs!
Also i prefer dynamicdns if you are planning on hosting from your home. Also IIS on windows will be a lot easier for you to setup then apache if you're new to web hosting.
