Lightbulb Forum FYI: Pictures of Stock Differential vs. Quaife Pozzy

Guys, informational only, just to be on record in the forum archives - here are pictures of the stock differential on the GT.

this seems like a toy compared to the quaife lsd:

I didn't get pics of it before it went in - but here is the link to what I'm talking about:
Differentials - Quaife Engineering

also available on the RRE page all the way at the bottom:
Road Race Engineering's 4G Eclipse Parts and Performance

I always forget about how EXCELLENT this upgrade is - well for freaking $1500 - $2000 to buy and install, it better be right? well imo it is worth every penny if you are obsessed with taking your FWD car to the next level. otherwise - forget about it, put it out of your head, you don't need it. but it IS awesome just to testify on this - it's like the engine is directly linked/connected to the wheels - instead of waiting a microsecond for those toy gears to catch up.

This is from that page and sums it up:
"Unlike a conventional plate-style limited slip unit, QUAIFE’s ATB Helical LSD unit relies on gears, rather than clutch plates for its operation. (or those toy gears in the one above - me)"

That is what I'm trying to say. What they said. Anyway, like I said, it's next level, performance-wise. Just FYI for the forum. I always forget to go on about this part so I figured I'd just make a "testimonial" thread. I will try to get another pic or two of the stock diff.

man i honestly can't remember where I got it...it was back before I was on the forum, actually - I want to say 'highpowermotorsports.com' or something like that - but the truth is, you don't want it from there - it was $1350 for me! You can find it way cheaper I'm sure. I think you can get it from RRE for less then that!

I don't know man. i don't know enough about it. I'm jealous of your mechanical skill, that's for sure. I know enough to be dangerous, but I'd be afraid I'd mess something up if I tried it myself.

Transmissions are complicated in terms of design and engineering, but for servicing and maintaining, it's pretty simple.

Here's my tranny

Here's my Diff

goddamn that quaife just looks like a monster. like i said above - military vs. toy. your stock diff actually doesn't look too bad but mine sure looked/felt like a medium grade at best part - the gears/teeth just seemed to almost be made out of plastic or something close to it. no me gusta.

It's not that bad, all you do once you crack it, is remove the shift forks, and both shafts and all the gears come out together (in mine the input shaft is bolted to the case), and the diff just floats there, unbolt the big differential drive gear from the stock diff, bolt it onto the LSD, press new bearings on the LSD and drop it back in, put the shafts back in making sure the gears interlock properly etc. and put the shift fork back on, align them, and put the case back on.

There's a few little things you should do before you reassemble, like verifying your differential spacers, but mine was bang on at 160,000km. Of course you should replace all the oil seals at a minimum...Bearings are optional, really.

it's not? that sucks...you guys probably don't get torque steer between gears...but it's in the corners you really notice the difference.

I LOVE this part. You put $1000 into your car and you can for sure FEEL IT. Few single parts make such an impact.

Then the Quaife should work for both as well...If the diff in the automatic uses the same bearings and drive gear as a manual, chances are very good that it will work. Unless there is a major difference in the width of the differential case, or the diff spline count on the automatic, then i would think it should work fine...
