Cat Confusion

hey guys i got a question. do i got a full 3 inch exhaust done recently and it Sounds AMAZING. I will post a clip soon but when they did the installation they said they had to leave the closest cat to the stock exhaust manifold? because it would cause more problems than its worth, i want to get rid of that cat. what would you consider i do

git a test pipe and deal with the ses light, get a afr preferably a wide-band to see the air fuel is good and a obdII to read the ses code every so often to make sure no new codes popped up.

i have yet to get my ses off with my 3 in.

keep it. a shop that gets caught removing that cat (depending on your state law) can be fined 25k. or if your caught and the cop spots it, your car is deemed unoperable and you will have to go back to stock, see your state ref, get smogged, and go to court. again, depending on your state law.

Plus the codes. If you dont mind me asking, why 3"? im assuming youre FI, if not, youre most likely losing power

Not knowing all you mods... Your 4 02 sensors are located on your pre-CATs/OEM Headers, two on each pre-cat. The third CAT is located where the tunnel area starts and just before the resonator. I don't know of any one that has had a problem with SES Lights/Codes/DTC when removing the third CAT and replacing it with a tester pipe, or just running their exhaust strait from where the third CAT starts.

But as mentioned above, depending on what State you live in, and how strict they enforce emission laws, is what you should consider. True, most muffler shops will not remove CATs because of laws and fines. However, most shops will make you a tester pipe that will replace the CAT, so you can go home and install it for testing purposes... RIGHT!!

What kind of exhaust system did you install, and any plans on installing headers??

The third cat isn't monitored by the ECU at all, only the cats on the factory headers. Removing the third cat but leaving the first 2 in place will sound louder than stock and will NOT throw an SES light but you also won't be able to pass a smog inspection since all 3 of them work together in order to "clean" the exhaust.

the ECU does monitor it after the 3rd cat IF you have GT long tubes and o2 sensor wire extensions. done correctly, this shouldn't throw any codes.

you ARE getting headers right? that 3" cat-back won't do the good it could do w/ those restrictive manifolds....just FYI.
