Bad mpg's
Thinking about going back stock on exhaust unless i can find a way to get some mpg's back.
Running Obx lt's No cat's at all with some f**ked up fart can for a muffler. Im getting ready to redo it all. Would putting a cat on it bring the mpg"s up? If not then stock we go lol |

If you want better MPG change the way you drive. Opening up your exhaust flow does not decrease your MPG. What decreases your MPG is you mashing your foot to the floor to hear your exhaust or to feel the performance.

^^^ agreed. I have full exhaust, intake, nitrous, and I still get the same MPG as stock.

Yeah, that's one of the biggest things with mods. We all enjoy them so much but it's when we start to love feeling the power and everything that our MPG's die. Also, you might wanna check out your spark plugs, injectors, and anything to do with your fuel/ignition system. If you're losing MPG you could be suffering from something besides an aftermarket right foot.

Im about to check everything again soon. The car has been maintained from the day i got it. Lol aftermarket foot. Every now and then i'll push it. But ive noticed either way i drive, it sucks. I can have a full tank....Drive across town and back and it be pretty close to half.
Would the cat have anything to do with it at all ? |

You've got headers, no cats, spacers, intake, etc.etc...
You need to tune the car. Fuel AND ignition changes will drastically help your MPG...

It can also be the gas you use. If you have Ethanol in your fuel you will get worse MPG then if you don't. Also cheap gas, or lower octane fuel will get worse mpg.

Not exactly true. Yes a car that is tuned to run on E85 will get more power then on the dino juice, but it will get shitty MPG.
Gas with Ethanol in it will not help your gas mileage, it will hurt it. The only reason places put ethanol in the fuel is because it is cheaper. So they don't "have" to charge you as much at the pump, so you feel like you are saving money, but your really not because you are getting worse MPG. This might help. I can't wait until Hack comes out with a handheld. A tune sounds about like what you need.

lmao I dont even look at the gas anymore (Unless on long journey), I just watch for when the yellow light comes on. I didn't know what my mpg was when I was stock, god only knows what it is now haha.

I think part of the problem with us is that we have so small of a tuner community for this that nobody besides Hack has really tried to break into this thing and decode the guts and change crap around. With the Evo community you probably had about 20 companies instantly wanting to crack that ECU and pull all the power out of they could. If those companies only realized what our generation of Eclipse is really capable of even being FWD they'd probably change the tune a bit. |

This is the second time I've seen you say something like this...what is it that you mean by this? What functionality is it that you want? The FIC allows you to tune the car just fine, it always has. It won't however let you remove the factory governor or raise your rev limit...two things that would be bad for MPG anyway! I'm curious as to what "functionality" you are looking for?

I searched and found that cheap gas gives bad mpg.
So id say if i was to tune just to get the most out of what i do have under the hood. Maybe even be able to tune for something more one day. Im using higher octane now so its actually running better..The mpgs went up a bit as well. |

^^^ I see.
Well, the 4G isn't no EVO! Anything that does come out is most likely going to be pricey no matter where it comes from...

On the fuel economy issue is the check engine light on? If so then what is the code? When I was in FL I did some ECU work and the owner commented that just fixing the O2 sensor stuff made a significant difference on his fuel economy travelling up to see me the second time. I haven't had the time yet to play with a GT and its economy but there are additional things like adjusting the EGR parameters to give you an easy 1-2mpg in additional savings. Adjusting the closed loop/open loop targets and target delays also help. There is lots of wiggle room in the stock tune. -Michael |
