Parked Revving vs Neutral Revving

So in Park, when I rev, it will go to a certain point and stop, then I have to let off and rev again soon after I let off for it to go past that little part, as in neutral, I can rev without that limit thing...Why?

Because in neutral your transmission is COMPLETELY disengaged, whereas in park it's not really 'engaged', but it 'kinda is' to keep you stopped and from moving at all.

I made that up.

BUT, I'm pretty sure it's correct. Sounds right.

jasondhimself is on a distinguished road
he is right, the trany park locks the output shaft on the trany. Where as neutral disconnects the engine completely from the drive components

Is it bad to rev to redline while in neutral/ park?

^it's not "bad" other then you are pushing your engine up to the edge of the envelope. approaching tolerances on parts and such, and you are straining and adding wear to the engine. just make sure you aren't doing that w/ a cold engine, and I don't think it's that bad to do. but someone else may correct me.

See? I knew I was right. That was just a 'common sense grew up around cars' question.

Thanks Joey. Yeah, even my dumb ass knows better not to red line in park or neutral, or while cold. I just wanted to ask if it would seriously damage internal components. Well, now, I'm a little smarter.

Haha. But what if you weren't? What would you say then?

Nah, my dad owns a truck repair business that now grosses over a million a year in four states, BUT when he started, the entire company staff consisted of my dad and....THIS GUY. That's an easy way to kill a growing company ; )

But one thing I DID learn is that as long as the clutch is disengaged COMPLETELY i.e. in 'neutral', nothing can go wrong and you're good to go ; )

I almost ripped out many an Allison Transmission learning that simple principle though....

Yes. It is very bad to rev to your redline without being under load. I repeat: VERY BAD!!!!!!!!! You risk valve float. Then, you have a broken or bent valve or piston.
