synthetic oil question
so i heard that you can switch from synthetic back to normal oil from some people and that you cant from others. which is true? i dont see a reason why you would want to in the first place but just wondering what is true

Its not that you cant but that you shouldnt, once you go synthetic dont go back. Someone else can chime in with more info but you just shouldnt do it.

i read a lot about that last year...
while this was true in the old days (early days of synthetic), the consensus now is that you can switch back and forth without any issues... again, just my reading.. |

yeah, and another tid-bit, I asked a guy at autozone if it mattered if you coudln't or couldn't put in a 'heavier' oil then what is recommended w/out issues, i.e. - 5W-20 (OEM recommended for GT) to say 10W-30. He said you can do that w/ an older engine - but it should NOT be done w/ an engine w/ less then 30K miles on it. Just FYI fellas.

I think the pressure and temperature levels are affected more than anything, plus in the morning with synthetic a dry start isnt as hard on the engine since synthetic leaves like a layer of.. idk stuff on the cylinder wall. That is what I have been told

Also synthetic properties are to pick up grime and dirt and carry it to the filter where as conventional is more like spraying something off with a water hose it's kinda just let's it settle at the bottom of that part i.e. The oil pan that is why they say don't switch if I'm not mistaken bc it would clog your oil filter too quickly causing oil pressure variances! If I'm wrong correct me but I'm pretty sure that's what they said at school

sorry guys, i didnt mean synthetic vs. conventional in terms of "is it better for our engines?", i meant more like some guys saying "oh i run RP because i get so much better throttle response / chicks looks / mileage", comparing one synthetic oil to the other (Mobil 1 to RP)

Use what the FSM and Owners Manual recommend. Hell, Trevin, you shouldn't even be running a thicker oil. With as tight as the tolerances and clearances are on these engines I wouldn't deviate from the stock oil besides going pure synthetic as these things usually roll off the lot brand new with synthetic blend in them.
Remember, weight of the oil isn't always the problem. If your worried your oil is gonna get too hot or start to boil because of a hot turbo or nitrous setup, you can always add an oil cooler to your car. They're pretty cheap to buy and definitely a good investment. I know I've gone a little off topic here but I've used synthetic since I bought this car and will use it til the day this engine stops running. |
