weird rpm thing!

Last night, I was driving home and my car started to act...weird. I noticed when I would floor it, the rpms would go from say, 4k to 5k then suddenly drop back down to 4k and rise normally after that. Also, I was in first and steadily accerlerating with like 50% or so on the throttle and the car died? at like 5k rpm. It felt like if you get on the red line and an engine cuts off. It dropped to like 1.5-2k rpm with no throttle response and then came back to life. I do have the cat converter ses and have for like a week. Also, I shifted normally and completely fine on one occasion and it felt funky and I smelled what I assume to be burning clutch. I have never burned the clutch before since owning this car and it is my 3rd manual car. It seems weird that the clutch would just poop out in one night. I gave this clutch the gauntlet when test driving the car and I've REALLY made this baby sweat in the past 3 or so weeks with absolutely zero problems except for last night. I wasn't even driving that spirited last night. Could it be the clutch? I dunno why the clutch would cause the car to die out in first like that, though. Could it be due to the bad cat code it s throwing? Need a tune? Crappy a/f ratio? Those are some general causes I've found online. Anyways, thanks for the help!

from what ive read, and heard from everyone, the cats are going to eventually bog your engine down and cause problems so thats half your issue, and if your smelling burnt clutch id check it and check your shift linkage to, just in case. my 3000gt burned out a clutch because of the shift linkage coming undone and that was not fun

Well, I drove it today and no problems

I only smelled the weird burnt smell once. I just assumed it was clutch because it was strong and funky. There was no grinding and I haven't felt any grinding. Shifting is still smooth as butter. I haven't noticed any sluggish behavior from my engine other than the weird dying out thar one time. I launched at 5k a couple times today and no slippage. I down shifted a lot and no slippage. I figure that the clutch would slip when launching the car if it's slipping in higher gears. When I notice the weird rise and drop in rpms it isn't when I shift. I can be in gear for a while. It doesn't make a difference. It's when I floor it and only at like 3k+ rpms.

Pat, the car has 78k miles(74k when purchased) I have no idea when/if the clutch was replaced so I'll assume it's the factory one.

Could there have been air in the line somehow not letting it fully engage/disengage? These symptoms happened when I raced mine at Willow Springs but my pressure plate actually set up from too much heat. It wouldn't let me engage or disengage at all! When I changed the clutch, all the little fingers on the pressure plate were only halfway up but that's a little different than ur issue lol...

Hope you figure it out bro, good luck...

It helps but it's terrible news lol. Damn it! I guess new clutch just replaced headers as #1I on my list. I want a staged clutch and I might get an lsd at the same time. Timev to do some clutch research. Any suggestions?
