So much bass I can't hear the lyrics
I just got a 10" Jl w7 sub and I'll tell you that these things hit like there is tomorrow. Seriously will blow away 2 12's no problem, but the thing is once I turn it up I can't even hear the lyrics, just hear the bass. I have the RF speakers, an aftermarket deck, and 500w amp just dedicated to the sub. But the thing is my car didn't come with the rf package and I was wondering if I needed a seperate amp to power the speakers so I get the most out of them. What do you guys think?

i had 2 w6v2's with a 1400 amp for a while, lets just say that my insides felt funny for about 2 hours after i would leave the car.
a friend of mine had 4 15 inch w6's in his impala. he would shake my windows from his end of the apartment complex...

As for the stereo, this is where I'll sound a bit preachy, but imho most people who add subs to their stereos are morons. They add these crazy-powerful subs with enough power to orbit Arnold Schwarzenegger...and use stock speakers powered off the head unit. EPIC FAIL. Beyond that, if you're going to run something as absurd as a W7/L7, you *need* to upgrade your speakers and run them amp'd. I haven't done the real bass in my car yet (hopefully in Oct if time permits), but I swapped out the stocks w/ 2 pairs of Alpine SPX-17REF 6 3/4s. I just used the hardware they came with to make the rears faux-coax and the fronts are components and let me tell you...wow. Even in a Spyder (IE no top to keep the music in), it's just amazing the range/clarity. For the bass I'm eying a Kicker L7 10" solobaric ported premade simply because it'll fit in the trunk and I can just pull it out if I need the space for some reason and deal with just the 8" (8w3v2 - sounds better than the retired 8w6...even before I inadvertently stuck my fingers through the *foam* cone...oy). Short version: Get some *nice* speakers and amp them with a clean 4channel or you're going to be stuck with a horrible imbalance in sound.

well just to clarify, for everyone else with subs, you're not morons. And yes components do create an amazing soundfield, but if you just add the right sub you can make a very enjoyable listening experience.

Lots of good brands out there for speakers, it's a matter of taste.
Rainbow, Helix, Beyma, Image Dynamics are some really good brands. They are pricey but they are the at the top of speaker performance. As far as sub drivers go, if you wanna go mainstream brand try to stick with their high end lines, not their low end: Kicker, JL, RF, MTX, etc. I prefer non mainstream as they are cheaper that a comparable mainstream and usually have higher quality standards and better customer service: Fi Car Audio, DD, AudioQUe, AudioPulse, Image Dynamics, Sundown, just to name a few. |
