started my second character - almost pure mage. using the 'mage armor' spells instead of apparel. it's really fun, actually. it's fun to encounter a tough melee opponent that you can't allow to touch you. when I have magika - all is fine. just slam them with a dual-casted destruction spell like fireball and they stagger if you have the right perk. staggering them is key to victory, but when you run out of magika (even w/ a 225% regeneration rate) you must find a way to keep out of their reach while it recharges for a few seconds.
oh yeah - the key to beating a strong spell caster I've found is to have a weapon that deals magika damage and drain them of their ability to cast spells. this has worked like a charm for me anytime I meet a tough spellcasting mage or enemy. it's pretty sweet. you want something like a mace that deals 40 or 50 points of magika damage. it's the shit. I am trying to beef up ALL of the schools of magic (via perks), as they are all powerful and fun to use, but that really leaves little room for any other disapline. I want alchemy, enchanting, and smithing also - but have had a hard time getting to these on the perk tree. there is always another/better magic perk I need. this game is TOO fun. it's sucking up all my free time.

^holy shit! I kind of quit on my first guy when he was at level 56 or so - the only thing at 100 was archery - which was my primary attack method.
now my mage is 87 destruction 80 enchanting (just by enchanting iron daggers w/ petty soul gems), 75 smithing (by upgrading everything I can - mainly iron stuff so it's cheap - great way just to boost the stat level), 74 alchemy (just by doing potions whenever I get stuff - then selling ones I don't need), 69 conjuring, 65 alteration, 60 illusion, 57 restoration, 65 speech, 63 sneak, 54 one-handed and the rest under 50 still

oh here's another little tip, sorry if it's been mentioned before:
when approaching a closed coffin/sarcophagus that you suspect to have a dragur inside ready to come out when you get too close (or one laying/standing in the wall for that matter) you can cast a fire/ice/lightning rune right by them/right at their feet and it will detonate - even if they haven't moved yet. it's a sweet little way to pop'em in their box before they can creep on a come up. I'm about it. and for the new players - don't forget to take the stagger perk (IMPACT) in the destruction tree if you are a mage or spell-sword even. you don't realize how important it is to stagger a strong foe until you actually start to do it - especially later in the game. trust me - do it and save yourself from dying and save your potions and your magika for other spells.

I'm a level 51 Imperial and I feel like I've gotten nothing accomplished lol. Killed quite about 19 dragons already. Joined the Dark Brotherhood but I'm only on the second mission.

This has lost a lot of the challenge since I found the Ebony Armour (that cloaks you and increases your sneak) with a 100% sneak, soul trap dagger in one hand, and invisible spell in the other hand... ended up playing 3 hours the other day with not one enemy touching me.
At least it's not as bad as Oblivion was, where you could camo 30% to each armor piece and be infinitely invisible...
