Highspeed Wireless Router

I know a lot of people here are tech savy so I decided who better to ask a question. Well the internet in my house has been slow and it's pissing me off cause now I can't play cod4 as fast as I want too. The tech guy from at&t said that there is nothing wrong with the house circuitry and it's probably one of the computers in our network that has a virus slowing the connection or something is wrong with the router. Either ways I was wondering if any of you know a highspeed wireless router that will be able to connect 5 comps. I checked cnet and everything seems to get mixed reviews.

Thanks,
Mark

wireless is also mucked up by microwave ovens and bluetooth as they all share the same unlicensed frequency band.

Not just in your house either. The neighbors for about 100 feet away can cause a problem, just as you can cause a problem for them.

On top of that the more machines you have on a single access point the slower they will all be.

Nothing beats a hardwired connection. Nothing.

still though, what is a good wireless router? I have a linksys wireless-G now and its not putting out a strong enough signal for my laptop only a couple rooms away. I only have a printer hardwired to it.

Hardwired you can feel the heat in the cable when the data is flowing LOL
If you have Cable as a IP it can get bottleneck with the other users on your street.
You may have a virus or other type visitor. I run Norton virus program, Lava-Soft Ad ware (Free Version) and Spy-Bot Search and Destroy (Free also)

Wireless I is the newest technology. It's the safest and fastest. N is probably the most realistically new technology, if you have an n-router and a n-wireless card you can have internet for up to half a mile. File transfers are faster too on the n. However, you need the card to go along with the router.

As far as routers, NETGEAR all the way. The Netgear rangemax has 7 internal antennas that find your wireless device and make a straight connection to it. Linksys doesn't even compare, my linksys used to make my internet slower and would overheat all the time. Netgear > Linksys.

Another thing you can do is make sure you have the router on the same floor of the house as you are using your wireless device. All that insulation in walls and floors really interferes with the signal.

P.S. Symantec is what I recommend for viruses. Ad-Aware for spyware, SB S&D is alrite... i'm not a huge fan of it though.

McAffee has 3 buildings. In building #1 they create viruses. In building #2 they write DAT files to catch and destroy the viruses that building #1 creates. Now building #3 is their marketing (ventral capitalist) people who when you don't want to pay for the updates they not only send viruses out to you the unlock keys in your computer that make it so you can't uninstall their software and slow your computer down.

My LINKSYS is on the first floor of my two story house and we have no problems with reception. I originally bought a Netgear but had to return it (bad unit) ....... LINKSYS PWNS Netgear IMO .....

My wireless- G by linksys is running my laptop just fine, and its 3 floors above where the router is.

Maybe the new Linksys' are good, but the one I have, the purple one always breaks down on my grandma (I gave it to her). But if it works for you thats fine, I know for a fact that the Netgear Rangemax has a farther overall coverage distance than the Linksys does because of studies, but yeah it's whatever u want and whatever more fits the budget. Just don't get D-link, they suck huge black cock.

my reccomendation is to go buy a nice router that is compatible with an aftermarket linux based firmware aka Tomato or DD-WRT. i will wager that you could take a $50 router beat some of the cisco routers out their, ive seen it and tested them the firmware makes all the difference and kills many people's problems go check these sites out they're really amazing firmwares. and they absolutely kill the same router with stock firmware, almost like a whole new animal.
