Timing belt change at 48 months?

I just got one of those Mitsubishi service coupon books, and it has one for $50 off to replace the timing belt. It states, the belt should be replaced every 60K miles or 4 years. I thought the 4 year part was a mistake, until I looked in the service manual, and sure enough that's what it says. The only way I can see a need to replace it in four years is if it's made of something that dry rots, like plain old rubber.

My GS just had it's 4th birthday, but only has 22K miles on it. Is this really something I need to be worried about? I don't want to invest 6 or 7 hundred dollars in something that will last another 40K miles. By the way, I don't drive the car hard at all.

before i spent all that money,i would at least have them do a visual check on it with the timing belt cover off to see the condition its in.it would suck to spend all that money to find out the belt is still in good condition.thats why they have the cover on it to protect it from the elements.i was told by a mitsu mechanic that if i drive it hard to change it out at 90k instead of 105k thats listed in my gs manual.

It says to change it out at 90k??!!? My manual says 60k ...I think you'd be fine ... But I'd at least have it checked out by at least 2 different stealerships or mechanics. See what their collective opinions are...

yes sir,it states in my manual 105k.i double and triple checked it just to make sure.maybe they put on a kevlar belt on the newer models ? like the ones they have on a harley.thats what kept confusing me when i kept seeing people say 60k and when i was at the dealer getting a oil filter,i asked a mechanic to make sure.but since i'm moddin my gs,i will have it done at 75k.

Mileage is more of a concern than the age, at only 22k Its probably not needed yet....as suggested above a visual inspection would be a good idea.

I replaced mine at 59k, it did have signs of wear and cracking already....but i drive my car harder than most.

If I understand this correctly, under the regular maintenance section the timing belt replacement is listed like oil changes, something you must have done at certain intervals, and pay for yourself, to maintain the warranty. However under the explanation of the 10 year 100K powertrain warranty, it states that the timing belt and associated parts are covered for 100K

If the timing belt is covered for 100K, you didn't replace it at 60K and it breaks at 70K and blows your engine, is Mitsubishi going to repair the resultant engine damage under warranty or just replace the broken belt for no charge?

They need to state somewhere that the timing belt must be replaced at 60K in order to maintain the 100K warranty.

ok,i asked them if my 2009 belt would fit your 05 rally and they said no,ours has two more teeth on it.i managed to get 3pics the two in the plastic is ours, thats the only way i could get a pic cause they wouldnt let me take it out of the plastic.the one out of the plastic is a random 1.dont know what that went to. but ours,on the 2.4 is quite a bit narrow than that.its looks like they are reinforced and pretty strong.as of right now,i'm having the dealer try and find out what they are made of and to triple check again that what it states in my manual is legit.i'm waiting on his call back.in the mean time here are the pics.these pics are allso from my droid.pretty good huh ? lol

when i get to 60k,i'll have to take the cover off of mine and find out what it looks like just to be safe.thats the best assurance you can do is at least check it at 60k.

EDIT;allright i just got off the phone with the mitsu service dept and he said the reason why its now 105k instead of 60k,is yes the belts are being made stronger and the design of the engine with friction on the ones listed for a 60k change are different than the 105k listed ones.i allso asked them that if on my car the belt breaks before the 105k or 84 months, then yes he said.they have to go by what the manual says and replace my engine.he even said on his mitsu, didnt ask which one,its 107k miles on his.oh and he allso said i could get that in writing.personally,i would say just check it or have it checked @ 60k just to be safe for mostly city drivers.hwy drivers wont be putting as much wear and tear and strain on the belt like stop and go.
