First oil change
Hey there. So today I dropped my car off to the dealership (08 GT with 8000 miles) and the dealer talked me into using synthetic blend instead of paying premium for mobil one full synthetic. He told me it was too early to be dropping in full synthetic, and as long as i change within 3000 miles i will be fine and to look into doing full synthetic around 50,000 miles. What do you guys think. Should I have paid the extra to get the full synthetic now or will the blend be a good choice for now. IDK what was used for the first oil change (or if there even was one) within the first 5,000 miles I didn't own the car. thanks!

i dont think 8,000 miles is too early to switch to full synthetic... what i would do however, is go buy the oil you want yourself next time, and bring it in...
dealerships have a 1,000 % profit on oil... |

Now you guys are making me second guess my decision now
should i call them back to see if they have changed it yet and pay the extra $20+ for the mobil 1 full synthetic?

When I bought my 07 gt it had only 3 miles on it. I took her right home drained out the oil and put castrol sentec full synthetic and a k&n oil filter and a k&n air filter. Nothin but the best for my demon girl. I have tried royal purple at one time but had to much engine noise. U could hear the valves or somethin clatering. I switched back to castrol for the best protection.

Oil is a huge debate and always will be as long as it is used as lubricant for the internal combustion engine.
It really comes down to your own preference. If you like Royal Purple then go with it. If you like Synthetic blend, go with that. If you hear any valve chatter or anything you should add a bit of the Lucas Oil stabilizer. It should knock down on your chatter. It is a common thing for that to happen though. Just make sure you're using the factory recommended weight unless you have a CRAZY amount of modification done or your engine is using just a bit of oil you can thicken it up some but at that point you should be looking at a rebuild in the NEAR future. Moral of the story. Use the oil you wanna use. You can switch from Synthetic to Synthetic blend to straight up dinosaur oil as often as you want as long as you meet the correct oil change times/mileage for the type used. I've stretched Royal Purple to an 8500 mile change and it was still decently clean so just use what you want. |

if u like the synthetic blend, make your own mix by adding some dino to some full synthetic, this way you know the percentage of the "blend" and didnt buy some off the shelf "semi-synthetic" which could be .05% synthetic and marketed as semi synthetic |

Ya it's no big deal man. I've been running non-synthetic oil on my car for 58k miles and have had no problems. But I do change it every 3k just because I like to push it pretty hard and because it's not synthetic. If I did use synthetic and babied the car I would go 5k between changes

Are you just saying that because it's what is in the service manual? The service manual for my dads car says every 20k but I would never go that long. 7500 is fine as long as you aren't burning oil and as long as it looks decently clean when you do the oil change

what kind of car does your dad drive? burning oil has nothing to do with change frequency and the oil should be dirty when you change it. |

I would advise that you do not take oil change interval recomendations from a car saleman. I feel like people change it earlier than recommended because it makes them feel good, and theres lots of propganda out there stateing you should but I believe it to be a wasteful practice

Their was no reason not to go synthetic all the way, idk what he was saying but since he saved you some cash maybe he was just looking out for you.

You need to chill out with the smart ass comments Mach. You wonder why people flame you? It's because of your attitude. Everyone is saying there own personal opinions on oil changes and you come in acting like your opinion is the only one that matters. Just leave the smart ass comments out and you will be fine.

My intentions are not to come across as a smart ass, nor act like my opinion is the only one that counts.
Im aware that this is a much debateable area and everyone has thier own opinion, and i gave mine. take it or leave it. I simply included reasons why people may change thier oil earlier than recommended, as well as why i think its a bad idea. wasnt trying to come across that way, but i suppose it could be read that way. Ill edit it to make it more pleasing sounding |

Thank you. I just interpreted what you said based on your previous posts. I just didn't like the fact that you were saying people who change their oil before 7500 are wasting money and time. Being cautious is not always a bad thing.

I used to use that line of thinking as well. Mine would be dirty looking right around 3K miles
recommended change intervals seem to be getting even longer than 7.5K, and im getting the impression that even that can be considered conservative, as many go sucessfully even with longer intervals Last edited by MACH1219; July 12th, 2011 at 03:02 PM. |

I change my oil every 5k dirty or not, I use 10W30 synthetic but I have very good reason to make sure my oil is in 100% shape. It is the only thing that cools my turbine rite now, so even if its not time to change it better safe than sorry. losing 20$ changing early is way better than picking up the mess yo uhave when a valuable piece of equipment fails in the engine bay.
