06 GT with broken axles?

My son just had the 90K check-up on his 06 GT. They said that it had broken front axles. I have been around cars for a long time and this is a first. Are these cars know for breaking them? It seems if they were broken, then it wouldn't be very drivable. What gives?

i'm no mechanic, but a broken axle is not exactly something that goes unnoticed for very long...
i'd find a new dealership, or ask this one if they have any certified techs on staff...

Thanks pat, a second opinion is worthwhile. Iv'e heard of breaking axles on MR2s but that is after modding the engine to over 300 hp.

in my 3 years on this forum, i dont remember any broken axle... maybe, maybe, one, but it's not like you see a thread on that every month...
and again, if your axle breaks, your car would be just about undriveable, how could you not notice that until your next service??

This is what I was looking for: a trend in broken axles. There doesn't appear to be one.
It's my son's car (in college) so I don't drive it. He has made no mention of vibration so it must be a false alarm. In any case, it's best to check it out elsewhere. Better safe than sorry.

Sad to say it looks like his local Dealership is trying to get some revenue.
The Eclipse has been pretty trouble free (except for burning oil). We bought it used and had the 60 K service. Then our local dealership didn't mention any broken axles.
I know that the GT has a lot of torque. Dumping the clutch at 5K might break an axle but I am sure others have done this without damage. Since there is no history of broken axles, we are less concerned. When he is next in town, we will lift the car and take a look.

well, i hate to say that, but your dealership really thinks that you & your son are like dumb & dumber... like seriously, other than a soccer mom, who would buy into "your car has a broken axle but you never noticed!!" ??
and if your son hasnt tried yet, a clutch dump at 5k rpms with tcl off is a lotta fun !! and it doesnt break axles

Well, it's not broken axles after all. Apparently the in-board CV joint boots failed and there is no grease in the joints. It's odd that leaking joints did not show up in the 60K C** dealer check-up. I asked the M** Service Manager and she indicated that the boots tend to fail... The M** dealer recommends replacing the axels. $760 using aftermarket parts. This was an expensive miss.

Clessy has a spectacular aura about
Man newer cars suck. I remember replacing every axle in my nx2000 for a mere $300.

I have read of several people with leaky boots on here. Sorry for your luck.

Thanks for the support guys. We will let you know if we find anything else once it is opened. According to the (free) service manual, it's quite a bit of exactling work to replace them. Not like when I replaced my 510's axles.
