Key Question

I recently got a 2008 Eclipse GS with only a single key. I am looking to get a spare made, but am looking for more of a valet key (without the remote and all that). I am told by the dealer all they have are the remote key fobs for $200+. I have found some that say they work with this car (MIT17A-PT), but I am just curious if anyone has had experience with them before I go out and purchase them. I know I will still need the dealer to pair it to the car since I only have 1 programmed key, just want to make sure this would even work, as I cannot find any information on them.

you said valet key, so i sent you a blank one. regardless, if you need the transponder, youre gonna have to spend quite a bit. probably around 150 with carving.

I only had one key with my sebring coupe which is basically a 3G Eclipse and I went to Ace Hardware and they cut transponder keys. Basically they cut a blank and then read the transponder code off the original key and program that to the new/spare key. So in theory the car thinks it's the same key. I hope all of that makes sense. I think I paid about $50. I'll have to check and see if they cut them for the 4G.

Your dealer should have offered to pay for a new one when you bought the car. That's what mine did for me, I just haven't gone to the Mitsu dealer an hour away to get one made yet.

Thats the type of key I was looking at, but after talking to a couple locksmiths and the dealer, they all say the transponder won't program to the car. Something along the lines of the ignition transponder system was changed in 2008 to an encrypted system. The locksmith also made the comment that you can tell this because the groove on the key was switched to the left side instead of the right on the 2006-2007(not really sure if I believe this). They told me if I wanted to buy the keys, they would cut and attempt to program them for $35, but say it probably won't work. The dealer won't cut any key that I do not purchase from them, but they will program it for $70. I wanted to confirm that these non-remote keys would work.

I have also called 3 seperate Mitsubishi dealers and all say the only key available is the key with the remote. I'm trying to find the key w/o the remote as I'm having a remote start installed on Wednesday, and don't really want the remote on the key(luckily they said they don't need a key for the remote start), plus a 2nd key wouldn't be a bad idea to have.

I'm thinking worst case scenario, I will just buy a used key off of ebay that is already cut for the remote/transponder and buy a shell like Daxenth suggested and have it cut/programmed at a local locksmith. I have pretty much lost all faith in my local Mitsubishi dealership(read below as to why), so am going to try to avoid them at all costs.

The dealership won't do a second key, and with all the issues i'm having just having them to fix the TPMS issue with it has been insane. We're going in for attempt #8 on Thursday for it. Attempts #1-6 were nothing more then them just adding more air to the low tires and telling me there were no leaks. Attempt #7 they supposedly found the leaks instantly, but told me the dealer I bought it from wasn't going to pay for it (I hate autogroups by the way), so I got to ear lash the general manager at the location I bought the car from, who was confused as to why they denied it, so its going in on Thursday for it. I am still doubtful this will fix the issue, and why it took 7 trips to find any leaks at all, and at that, leaks in 2 different tires; one where the TPMS sensor is the other where the tire didn't seal properly to the rim, but I'm getting off topic here. Guess all I really am wondering is if anyone with w 2008-2009 Eclipse has successfully gotten those keys like on amazon to program to the car?

Either way get a second key one day you will need it then you'll be screwed and end up paying a locksmith to open your car or worse you'll lose your key completely and you'll have to get a ride to the dealership and have to provide proof of ownership to get a key cut then programmed.

Yea, I ended up buying a used key with remote/transponder for 20 off eBay and a blank shell with blade for 10. Once I include the cutting and programming I'm only looking at 65 for a key I know will work, much better then the stealership.
