Painted Gas Door today . . .

I found Chaos' thread a while back (HOW TO: Cure Gas Cap Cancer) and my gas cap door was looking like crap so I wanted to fix it. I decided to paint as I thought it would look better.

I didn't want it to stand out too much so I painted matte finish. I did a total of 4 light coats and a medium coat. It is still curing so I plan to reassemble and reinstall tomorrow.

I sanded with 220 grit dry, then wet and cleaned it real good. I took it apart cause I thought it would give a cleaner, more even coat.

Thanks! Took a couple hours at most.

I put it together today but the paint was still a little soft and it was much harder to get together than take apart. I made a tiny chip in the top left corner of the paint putting it together so I hit it again with the paint today and plan to just leave it off for a week so it is fully cured before I put it back on the car.

I have a white convertible with black top and black trim so black seemed like a good choice for my car.

I think the chrome mirror finish would look great on your car. I have polished aluminum engine parts in the past with great success. I used a drill with a polishing wheel but I have a bench grinder now. I think a bench grinder with a polishing wheel and a few different polishing compounds would look absolutely fantastic.

If you do, post some pics!
