Brain Shunt Procedure
So, my younger sister recently had brain surgery and things aren't improving as they should be. She has fluid building up where the cyst was removed and the doctors are talking about putting in a shunt. I have grasped the basic concept, just wondering if anyone has dealt with this and knows anything that might help put me at ease about it. It just makes me sick to my stomach thinking about such a big procedure and what complications may come up. Very scary stuff.

Thanks guys. Just trying to gather as much info as I can. I've done hours of research, just looking for life stories and not so much the science behind it.

How old is your sis? Do you know if she is getting a VP shunt? She probably has hydrocephalus which is a buildup of fluid or csf(cerb spinal fluid) in the brain cavity. This shunt is to help relieve that pressure. So she will go into surgery and they will drill a hole into her skull and insert a small catheter... there will be a valve that is positioned behind her ear... then the tube will end probably in the stomach area... when the pressure in the head builds up from the excess fluid the valve will open up then the extra fluid will drain into the abdomen... its nothing bad at all its something that will help take the pressure down in her skull in order for her brain/body to heal better/faster after her surgery... I graduated nursing school last december and I took care of a little boy at Childrens hospital once with one of these... if you have any questions or just need someone to talk to I can try to help you as best as I can. Dont be afraid to message me id love to help you through this I know its rough especially when you dont completely understand everything it can be scary... good luck i will pray for your family!!!! PS hopefully that wasnt too much science for you whoops

Thanks, thats actually the part I'm grasping though. She has hydrocephalus where cerebrospinal fluid is building up due to a blockage from an arachnoid cyst which has been removed but is still causing a blockage in her right temporal lobe. I was just concerned about her life after this shunt. Just the concerns of having one, how her lifestyle will change, frequent doctor visits, possible failure of the valve. I just don't know how problematic they can be or what kind of restrictions it might cause her to have.

Tyler I sure hope your sister will be fine. I have a friend who had one of these for similar reasons and it worked perfectly, he healed, and now has no issues.
Korinda...Great post! Got you an e-rep!

Thanks guys. Just had a doctors visit yesterday. They said its looking a little worse. That was just the opthamologist though. She still has to see her surgeon to see what has to be done. I appreciate the support.

Tyler you're a good brother. You should continue your research and familiarize yourself with her condition and terms associated with it. You'll be a great asset to your family and her if she or they ever have questions. I will keep your family in my prayers. I'm impressed at those members who posted here I love seeing people help other people. That's the way it should be. Happy Holidays all. |
