nokiauser has a spectacular aura about
No headers = no flex pipe needed

You can add a flex pipe but if you do, you might as well go full cat-back upgrade and potentially headers.

You have OEM exhaust manifolds.

Complete stock exhaust setups have a problem with the spring flex things to link up the stock muffler to the pipe. It's possible it broke (it's happened to a few of us) and is now causing the rattling you're hearing.

What would be the appropriate fix if this was the case?

That was one of my problems with my 2g, shield was all corroded and once i hit a pot hole hard enough i cracked the shield and it was scraping the ground, just ripped it off lol.

yeah the stock y pipe has a flex section right behind where the front bank connects to it. its easily seen by getting underneath your car. on the y pipe there is also a heat shield where the actually Y in the pipe is. the heat shield is on the top half of the pipe and mine was rusted out and just sitting on top when i took it off a month ago. get underneath the car without it running and check that shield and to a visual check of the flex section of the Y.

midnight07GT will become famous soon enough
I had a loose heat shield around the last " main " cat. Threw it up on the lift at work and ripped it out. Get underneath and tap on every shield you see.

If the spring is broken, loosen the bolt for the muffler at the flange. Take out the spring and screw in the bolt.

Pat's got a good point. The heat shields are notorious for falling apart. The dealership took one of mine out.
