Finding "the road".
Who's lucky enough to have the best driving road in the world next to them? How did you find it?
For those people who think drag racing is the be all end all of driving, you won't understand this thread, so best be off to exercise your right foot. For the rest of us, there's a road out there somewhere with our names on it; it's curvy, it's empty, and it's where you go to test your car, yourself, and scare all the waste material out of anybody silly enough to be walking along it. |

I used to live in Nevada where we had little stretches of unbelievably fun roads. They usually ran alongside the main highway, or at right angles off of it, but they were unbelievably fun. Now that I've moved to New Mexico, I'm at a loss. The only one I've found so far is a two lane one mile stretch that's ridiculous if you pretend it's only a single lane. Problem is there's almost always traffic on it, so you only get to truly drive it once out of every five visits, and it's stupid short.
I've been poring over google maps today, and I made a mistake earlier... I saw a road that looked like it would be perfect. There was no straight stretch longer than a quarter mile, it was off in the boonies so chances of traffic were low... problem was I got there and suddenly it turned into dirt. So I came back, and this time I started zooming in more, and discovered that my next two targets were also dirt roads. Not fun rally dirt, but unmaintained garbage that would put holes in a truck.Really bummed right now that I might be without a proper driving road. It's all so neat and orderly, and straight, and crap. |

Yeah no those lucky bastards get to drive all kinds of roads I'll probably never see. I'm curious about the local drives. Whats around Reading, PA? Best road there, what is it like?
I found an app put out by BMW called "The Ultimate Drive" which seems like a cool premise, but you can tell who uses it... the only roads marked on here in my area are highways. Ooooo, the interstate, never thought of trying that one. The more I look at how square everything is in this bloody city the more you realize how much people are concerned with a certain level of control over everything and not about the fun of it. I have about a mile stretch of nothing but curvy roads. Problem is you can only hit them fast at 3am if you're lucky to not have any cops. It sucks but it's the best out here in hick town Florida.

I have the dragon a few hours away, most of my friends have already gone. They just banned certain size vehicles on it so win. I'll go when I work on suspension a little more

We got a road called angelas crest (or angelas forest) highway here in SoCal that goes through the mountains. Its about an hour long drive and a couple people actually die on it every year. Can only go at night though because of cops...I plan on going again in the spring when it opens back up

The best is mountain roads with a posted 60mph limit, except you're supposed to slow down to 45 for certain stretches... supposed to...
I think I found a new batch of potentials, but they're on the other side of the east hills from me, which means a 30 minute drive just to get within range of them. Might have to move out that way. |

The forum double posted on me. So I guess I'll use this one to write the rest...
Will, I've heard of that stretch. In fact I saw it come up again today when I was trying to abuse Google into giving me some classified information on the subject. In fact I just looked it up on google maps and I think I died and went to hell... because I'm nowhere near california, so I can't possibly be in heaven looking at that and not being able to touch it. How come so many people are dying on it, straight up reckless driving, or is there another reason? Last edited by mwaterous; January 28th, 2012 at 08:43 PM. |

Alright. I officially hate you Trevin.
![]() The only downside is how famous it is. It probably gets crawled by police and has a ton of people on it at any given time. So it's missing the exclusivity factor, but I'd still like to go drive it someday. |

Alright, I know I'm dominating my own thread, but my wife and I will be heading north to Taos in two weeks for our anniversary (February 14th, seemed like a great idea at the time, now it means our anniversary costs four times as much as anybody elses). This is the slight detour I plan on suggesting:

Yes it has very heavy traffic, but 90% of it is people just like us so they drive just like us. No worries
my car isnt ready for that road yet but this summer hopefully it will be! Don't hate < 3

This is only a few hours away from me. I rented a cabin back in September and drove through the Dragon several times. It's a lot of fun and there are professional photographers set up along it that take your pictures and post them online. You just have to be careful cause the cops are bad. It's a hell of a good time!

What's keeping one of the only GS-T 4Gs in the world off the Tail? I highly doubt even a stock GS would be the slowest car there, and while in all honesty I'd probably time myself and try to beat it... it's not about being the fastest either. It's zen.
![]() To be fair, if I had to fly out there to drive it, I'd almost want to rent a Ferrari for the day to make it really worth it. But if I lived near it? I'd be tappin that tail all the time. |

I think the SC, NC, and TN guys should get together one day and drive it. It only takes me a few hours to get there.

Im originally from upstate NY and the back roads there around broadalbin and corinth are vacant about always and no speed limit posted except up and down the mountain which even old gramma goes faster than shes suppose to. Id say there are at least 20 45degree turns up and down the mountain but I have never taken my 4g up there cruising.

Well Im located in Utah, and when I venture to the east side of utah (mountinous area) there are so many paved, curvey roads, that I love to take my motorcycle up there cause it is so fun. only problem is, that reason that i just mentioned, they get dominated by motorcycles, I haven't had the opportunity to take the GT up into them, YET. but this summer hopefully i can get up there with the finished product and hit the turns. but there are so many up there that i cant put them all. but if you look at a map of utah look east of I-15 and just adventure through the map, so much road through the mountains, one just gets lost.

Florida = Nothing but straights infested with cops (Especially at night. I see swarms of cops everywhere I go whenever I get off closing my shift at night) but there's this one road that curves and has a peaked hairpin turn. Pretty damn fun to slingshot around but too dangerous to attempt over 45mph.

I just got denied again today. Found a curvy 2 1/2 mile stretch right below the east hills, so I went out to drive it and was greeted with a park fee sign. Not worth it to pay a park fee, even a dirt cheap one, for 2 miles of road. Maybe for 20.
Can't wait to see NM-4 in two weeks. I'll be going pretty close by Los Alamos though, so let's hope I don't come back with three arms or something. |

We've had 2 meets that were in pigeon forge so far. its really awesome all along 129. we cuddnt hit the dragon as fast as we wanted due to cops and a heavy flow of traffic, but we cuddnt even go to the gift shop due to all the bikes. id still say its thebest meet ive been to since ive been on c4g

I was in Pigeon Forge at the end of September and they were having the fall rod run and I didn't know it was going on. The main strip was so packed with cars it took 2 hours to get through the whole strip. When I drove over to the dragon it wasn't real bad I didn't even pass one cop. I got up some speed and scared the shit out of my friend that was with me. I knew what I was doing cause I haven driven it before on a motorcycle. Seriously if anyone ever goes up that way let me know and if I'm off work I'll come up and meet y'all

i think out of all my driving, there's only been 2 major roads that i've gone crazy over driving through.
one is the #4 highway on vancouver island heading from comox/courtenay to tofino, that road is damn crazy with its elevation change (around 700ft difference), negative g corners, rock cuts that span out across the highway about 10ft in the air (making it hard for truckers to stay in their own lane), and a good speed made for a great little trip to tofino and back. the other is on some highway near kenora ontario. i don't even know what road i was on, but my lady at the time knew of it, and told me how to get there and i went to town. i had just put in coils & injector controller before we made the trip out, so it was a super fun road, again lots of negative g corners, good speed, and 0 traffic. i don't think i've ever heard tires squeal so much.. lol :-D |

We ought to work up a TOD meet late Spring or early Summer. I'd be up for that. We could meet at Pigeon Forge and hit the Dragon and cruse the strip at Gatlinburg. There are tons of good roads around there. If you like wild life....Cades Cove is near there...a 11-mile loop through a box canyon where you can walk out into a herd of deer, see red wolves, fox, wild turkeys, Russian boar and such. I even know where there is a cave full of bats just a short walk from the main road. There is also a smaller loop like that at Cataloochie but there you can see the Elk where they have started a re-introduction program. ...and there always the casinos in Cherokee too ...but I'm not much of a gambler.

Yeah I was told to slow down several times but hell I was having fun. I'm sure my car will handle a lot better now that it's lowered a good bit. I think we should make a weekend of it of we can get people together. I'm already doing the Tampa meet but have two weekends off a month and if I need a weekend off its not usually an issue. The dragon is awesome.
