HOWTO: Change the engine oil on the 4G.

Disclosure:

This how-to is written simply for reference only. Perform these steps at your own risk and use common sense. The author will not be responsible for any ill-effects (if any) if you make a mistake somewhere during the process.

Tools Needed:

1) 17mm socket or closed-ended wrench

2) oil filter wrench

3) jack and jack stands

4) oil catch-pan

5) shop rags

Steps:

1) Carefully jack up your vehicle on the jack-up point just behind the passenger-side front wheel, under the passenger-side door.

2) Secure the vehicle on jack-stands, never hold up the vehicle on the hydraulic jack alone.

3) Remove the oil-filler cap and the engine oil dipstick.

4) Turn the oil drain plug counter-clockwise using the 17mm wrench.

5) Turn the oil filter counter-clockwise using the oil filter wrench.

6) Let the oil drain thoroughly before reinstalling the oil drain plug and a new oil filter.

7) If you are replacing the oil filter (as recommended), you will need approx. 4.5 quarts of oil. The recommended oil viscosity is 5W-20. If you are not replacing the oil filter, you will need approx 4 quarts.

8) Reinstall the oil filler cap and dipstick.

9) Run the engine for about 5 minutes. Then shut it off and wait for a few minutes before checking the oil level on the dipstick. The oil should be somewhere in between the 2 dots on the dipstick. Also, check the oil filter and drain plug for leaks.

Your done!

You should ALWAYS replace the oil filter if your doing your oil at the proper times (5000-6000rpm).

It also doesn't hurt to poor some fresh oil into the new filter before you screw it on. Avoids a lack of oil for a second or so when you start the car afterwards.

When do you suggest would be the best time to switch to 1/2 synth/ 1/2 non-synth oil? I believe that I read somewhere that its best to do it once you reach 10,000-- but Im not too sure. I just recently changed my oil when I reach 4500miles, and I used the non-synthetic oil, which seems to be pretty good. And I did put some oil on the new filter before replacing the old one, and that worked out real well

Umm because the dealer is about an hour from my house and why would I take it all the way up there and add the extra mileage on my car, when I can do it myself in about 20 min??

Do it at your next oil change. You can switch back and forth it makes no difference.

I haven't been to my dealer in ages. Do everything yourself, you learn more that way. Unless you feel un-comfortable.

Thanks for the advice. I have only one more question, should I switch over to 100% synthetic my next change or should I do the 50/50??

Just switch to Mobil One synthetic 5W20. Don't mix 50/50 there is no point to it.
You can switch from regular to synthetic or vice versa as many times as you want but I wouldn't suggest mixing it.

I don't thing she meant mix the oil half conventional half synthetic i believe she meant semi synthetic or synthetic blend. some people like the idea of synthetic but are afraid to use it. synthetic can cost almost three times the price of conventional but it also has three times as much benefit.semi-synthetic is a blend of mineral oil with no more than 30% synthetic oil. Designed to have many of the benefits of synthetic oil without matching the cost. but i say if your going to pay so much for your car you should make the engine happy and buy the good synthetic.

WOW im amazed the difference from the OEM shit the Dealer gives you and some full synth royal purple.....im getting much better gas mileage, faster/better shifting, used to if i put it in reverse and then hit drive real quick after stopping you could feel it "buck" now none of that happens at all. gonna be going royal purple forever. one more question tho, does it matter what oil filter you get? i just got a Wix filter and it seems to be doing just fine. i think i got a fairly good deal from O'reilly 5qts. + filter + wrench for $35 idk i thought it was fine since thats what i paid the dealer the one time i had my oil change. when should i change it next? i was thinking 5K miles but idk ive seen some do it every 4 or 3 1/2

I cant believe people actually pay to get an oil change. well, if your stealership does it for free, then thats all good.
