Brendon's V6 SE

I bought my car in August, and I've kind of just been observing posts on the site. I've gathered ideas from people for quite a while, and I've finally started doing some stuff to my car (mainly aesthetic thus far), but I plan on adding some performance parts in the future. As of now, the only "performance" mod I have is a custom exhaust fabricated by a guy here in Spokane. And by "fabricated," I mean he sawed off the muffler, welded on an axle-back straight pipe, and a fancy exhaust tip. I was worried it would sound like shit, but I'm actually impressed. With the cats and resonator untouched, it's not too over the top, but it still sounds mean.

Gonna start posting pics of my exterior and interior stuff as I complete projects and what not. I try to do most things by myself or with the help of friends, because I enjoy the DIY, and the MacGyver-ing aspect of it. This thread is basically going to serve as my history with the car.

Attached is my Douchebag picture when I first bought the car in August.

Carbon Fiber Wrapped Center Console

I got some free scrap 3m Anthracite Carbon Fiber wrap, and I decided to wrap the upper center console (I call it the center console, though I know the center console is often regarded as the middle piece where the shifter and e-brake, handle, etc. are, I just don't know what else to call it...?). Biggest pain in the ass of my life, but it looks great I think.

Wrap and Plasti Dip

Bought some matte black vinyl wrap and did my hood and roof. Going to redo it at somepoint with black carbon fiber vinyl, mainly because this was my first time wrapping ever, and it is kind of sloppy in some places. Looks good until you know where the boo-boo's are. Also, plasti-dipped the front bumper just to see if I liked it. Going to wrap it in the future.

I dig it man! I've been wanting to vinyl wrap my roof but I'm too much of a wuss...plus the sunroof ups the difficulty too...

Not too many V6 SEs out there either so be sure to take care of her!

Thanks man! The sunroof actually made it easier because you could squeegie towards the outside and the middle, where as on the hood, you had to get every little bubble out to the edge, and it was a mess. The worst part was the antenna on the roof, and cutting the edges. I messed up from the start because my sheet of vinyl was smaller than the roof, so I heated it up and stretched it about another 8 inches... Looks like someone chewed on the front of the roof. and the antenna is just... well... shit. Gonna plan better (and buy a full sheet) before a lay down the carbon fiber vinyl!

Ah that makes sense. Well at least you got some practice in with (hopefully) cheaper stuff before you do it right the next time!

Yeah, I think it was about $75 total for the vinyl and everything... The carbon fiber is gonna be around $180, so I'm gonna try to not screw the pooch there. $75 is an acceptable loss for proof of concept, $200 kinda hurts if it fails...

Thank you! I knew there was a better name than center console, my brain was just flustered. Just watch a bunch of YouTube videos, plan, and take your time. And buy the right size sheet of vinyl. Now, I should take my own advice...

Finding the vinyl in the right size is the hardest part. Can't find anywhere local that sells it, and after shipping it's cheaper to have a professional do it for me! Hahaha. Everyone is quoting me $300 for it done with 3m

My place in town quoted me $350 for the roof, but will sell me the carbon fiber vinyl for $80(depending on how much, it comes in 5' long pieces, and then its $18 something per foot. So for a 4x5 piece I'll be right around $80. The matte black was only $10 per foot).

That's a princely sum for what's essentially a giant sticker. Never wrapped anything and doubt I ever will, but it can be made to look good if done right.

When do you plan on adding the real fun/go-fast stuff? Lol

I just like that you can take off a wrap, where as paint ruins your original color.

As for fun/go-fast stuff, I have mixed feelings... From what I've read, the V6 guys are kinda out of luck. I know I can do intake, headers, and exhaust, but then what? No readily available turbo charger system, and supercharging seems inefficient. Nitrous is the only thing I've really read about on here that isn't the price of a small castle, and can boost the GT. Part of me wants to stockpile money, and find some way to either turbo or twin turbo it, but at the same time, I'm starting to save for a duplex... I'm in a tough situation. haha

Good thing about the V6 is that it responds very well to bolt-ons, so you don't really need boost or anything exotic to get this car to hustle. Fully bolted and tuned, the 6G75 is good for over 300whp and 270wtq. Parts may be harder to come by and a little pricier than other platforms, but the benefits are worth the investment imo.

Fair enough. The motor does have forged con rods, so it can handle a fair bit of boost too.

If I had the money/time/patience, I'd want to build it up NA. FI is nice, but it's been done. Stroke and bore your 3.8, run 13.5:1 CR pistons, hot cams, upgraded valve springs, P&P, meth, etc and go to town on those snail runners. Nothing is more surprising than an NA car walking a similar boosted one imo.

Not gonna lie, I only know what about 1/3 of that meant. Lol. My car before this was a 2005 Scion Xb, and all I did was drive it. Never really been into cars until the past few months. I've kind of developed an understanding, but some shit still goes way over my head. From what I do know though, you're suggesting no boost, and just go balls out on the engine?

What I suggested shouldn't be attempted by someone just getting into car culture and modding. It'll take a lot of work, trial and error and possibly even a 5 figure bill. If you're coming from a Scion xB, 300whp (~350hp) should be more than plenty. If at some point you're looking for more, then build your car up from there. Take it one step at a time you know.

Oh yeah definitely. I wasn't planning on diving in right this second. Part of me is questioning whether or not I even want to mod this car, or just save money for a better car. I kind of like the idea of having a long term project, but at the same time, the money might be better suited going for something else. All I'm really doing now is reading about the different things people have done to their 4G's and deciding what I'm interested in learning more about.

Nothing too crazy. Took off the Eclipse lettering, as well as the GT V6. It was pissing me off that it wasn't symmetrical...

I tried! I wanted to use film as compared to the VHT Night Shades, but oh my god... Tint film doesn't stretch like the vinyl wrap, and our headlights are so round. I just could not get it to lay down for the life of me. Kept creasing on me. Then again, it was $8 at Walmart. I may give it another shot...

I agree that the Eclipse lettering is a little tacky and the Altezza style tails were dead and buried before the 4G even came out, but I personally would've kept the GT V6 badge. There are so few 4Gs, and even less with the V6, which makes owning one a little more special. It's almost like driving a Chevy and removing the SS badges. Kinda odd if you're not going for a sleeper build imo

Otherwise, liking the progress so far.

They're completely unrelated! I got the ticket for speeding (I thought the limit was 45, was going like 49) on my way to a track meet. Guy pulled me over and was like, "You know how fast you were going?" I said, "I dunno, like four or five over...?" and he said "It's 35 through here." To which I just sunk down in my seat and took it... Luckily we have a program here where you can take a class and get the ticket off your record (only $120 compared to the $207 ticket) and your insurance won't go up. So that' a plus. And I guess the cop wasn't a TOTAL dick, because he didn't fine me for my front plate in my window.

AND THEN. I stayed the night at a friends apartment, and woke up in the morning to that colossal fuck up on my bumper. No cars near mine to be seen. Some jabroni hit my shit and bailed out. Its not dented or anything, just scratched and messed up... No security cameras or anything about. Gonna try to buff it up and maybe it's just some paint that got traded...? I'm just kind of salty cause I get my car all debadged, waxed, and pretty, and then BOOM. A massive fuck you from the car gods.

If I had a dollar for every time I woke up to surprise body damage like that, I'd have $3. Seriously not fun, especially knowing that your town is full of nail n' bail shitheads.

Ticket and driver's ED don't help much either. Sucks.

The worst part about it is that I speed all the time. It's a real problem. But the one time I get a ticket in this car is when I actually thought I was driving responsibly. I can't even tell a cool story. lol

Lol, that was basically me from 2009-2013, always speeding and racing whenever I could. Only time I got a ticket was on a leisurely drive to school. 71 km/h in a 50 zone ($115 and 2 points). If the cops knew half of what I'd done, they'd of taken my license and crushed my car. Try to take it easy, you'll grow out of the 'need for speed bro' phase with time.

I don't necessarily drive fast because I like driving fast (I mean I do, but there's a time and a place), I just like to get where I'm going lol. With that said though, I was on the freeway last night (70 MPH zone, and I was actually going the limit), and a Cadillac CTS pulled up and was revving at me, doing little surges forward and dropping back, trying to get me to go. Needless to say, I floored it to about 125 and shit on him. Not that I was really surprised, that thing is a damn land yacht.

And then thought, "You know, two days after a ticket, that might not have been the wisest."

Haha, once you see the Red Mist, logic and reason take a back seat. One of my few "races" with the GT was against a new ATS 3.6 AWD. That thing's got the base Camaro engine and makes over 300hp, so needless to say he pulled on me. The truth is, there are no winners in street racing. You get ahead, it proves nothing. It's a game best left unplayed.

Wasn't street racing... Rather, rapid highway acceleration...?

Whatever you want to call it, it's all the same to the cops and the judge hearing your trial. I reserve all my "rapid acceleration" for onramps and collision avoidance lol

In retrospect, I should've left it in 2nd and got the hell out of there before the SX4 attempted the surprise PIT.

Finally Tinted My Tail Lights

Finally got around to tinting my tail lights. I used Rust-O-Leum Lens Tint, as well as their Crystal Clear Enamel. Started by removing my tails (they had a bolt in the back, as is contrary to what's mentioned in the HOW-TO on here, and that was a major hand cramp). Cleaned off lights with isopropyl alcohol, then sprayed 3 coats of the tint on, 15 minutes apart. Followed that up with some 1000 grit wet sanding, and then 7 coats of clear coat, 15 minutes apart. let dry for an hour, wet sanded again with 2000 grit, and polished with some overpriced Meguiars polish.

I also tested out some ideas with plasti-dip, and I'm really not a fan, lol. The spoiler is off too... Can't decide if I want to just make it black, or get a totally new wing. I kinda like the look of the 370z and STi style wings... I've got some thinking to do!
