Need suggestions

So my gf got a new job out of town and needs a car. She wants a four cylinder, manual, preferably four door and with a good stereo. Has to be reliable and inexpensive to maintain. Her budget is 2k (1.5k US). Thoughts?

Cant beat the classic civic, camry, corolla, or accords, especially in that price range. I hear you can get some 2000s lancer EX's for that price. From what I gather, they're fairly reliable but I haven't looked much into it to say for sure.

Honestly, I don't think any car shes going to get in that price range will have a "Good stereo", unless you buy some high schooler's 99 camry that they threw some 12s in the back of.

I'd go with a 'yota. I still think they're hands down the most reliable cars ever made. Parts are cheap if/when it breaks, and the older ones should be relatively easy to work on. Decent fuel economy. Stereo isn't too hard if it doesn't come with one. You can put together a system for under 200.

Well, she was impressed with my stock non RF stereo, so I can't imagine her stardards are going to be too high.

I have connections with a mechanic who buys cars at auction. Will see if he can get an '08 Lancer for 2k, but if not, may look at some older Civics or Cobalts, the ladder being a dime a dozen these days (could get an 08/09 midlevel coupe for 1k). Corollas are ok, but next to Neons are my least favorite cars lol

Cobalts are decently reliable. My sister's had a spring crack before 100,000km though. The fuel economy is good too. They're a decently comfortable ride (Better than a stock 4g), and the sound system can come with a sub (no box, just a sub in the trunk wall)

Nicer to work on than a civic too. less sharp plastic everywhere, and more engine bay space

They're criminally underrated and undervalued cars. I'm a little biased because I owned one (a G5) and have very fond memories of that car. There's a surprisingly healthy aftermarket for them too, enough to put the 4G to shame. Even factory stuff is easily interchangeable, like a header/DP off a supercharged SS will bolt up nicely to a 2.2, as will the shocks and struts and a few other things. The upgraded stereo in those cars is a Pioneer.

The Lancer and a Cobalt are my top picks as of now.

blkwings is on a distinguished road
After a quick Autotrader search, my vote is 04-06 Lancer. Super cheap and reliable, and incredibly fun in Ralliart trim. The Ralliart in those years has a nicer interior than the 15 Evo too. Plus, same engine as 4G GS...keep it in the family!

I don't think your going to beat an older civic. They are pretty reliable, efficient, cheap to buy, cheap to own, cheap to insure, cheap to fix. Most can take parts from +/- 2 generations. and the parts are cheap and easy to find if anything does break. And because they have been so common for so long, most experienced mechanics should know them well. Oh yeah, they're pretty fun little rides too!

We should be picking up a five speed 2007 Yaris sedan for $2500 tomorrow. A little over budget, but hard to go wrong with a 'Yota. Great deal too seeing as many are hovering around the 4k mark online.

How disappointing is the 'Yota's torque compared to your 4G?

She's going to pay $185/y for 1 way insurance with a $250 deductible. Damn man, that's what I pay for two months on my GT lol
