R.I.P Lancer

TOKYO — Mitsubishi Motors has introduced the oddly named Galant Fortis sedan in the home market. Americans already know this same car as the replacement for the Lancer that went on sale here in March.

All-new sheet metal hasn't given the car much more personality. But in typical Japanese style, the Galant Fortis can be loaded up with goodies, including a navigation system and four-wheel drive. Prices in the domestic market range from $15,350 to $20,950 for the full-boat Galant Fortis Super Exceed Navi.

The car is taller and wider than its predecessor, with more interior space. Mitsubishi says the face of the car represents the new family look that will be seen on future models.

A new version of Mitsubishi's DOHC 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is mated to a six-speed "sport mode" continuously variable transmission with paddle shifters. Sport models ride on 18-inch wheels and tires.

Other technical features include seven airbags, "odor eating" headliner, rain-sensitive wipers and adaptive front lighting.

What this means to you: A Lancer by any other name still looks boring.

Well I know that MMNA did announce the galant was gonna go on Hiatus for a couple years and then return with a Facelift.

I think it has more to do with the fact the Galant has been around in the US a lot longer. Consumers prefer to buy a name they know and there thinking with doing this they can appeal to the family buyer, and the tuner at the same time with one car. And the lder family guy isnt scared because of the tuner label put on the Lancer. Also with the Economy companies are trying to cut back on products and sell more of fewer products than less of more products.
