Eclipse for... Skyline GT-R?!

No, no.. it probably won't actually happen, but it has crossed my mind. The 25 year import ban is just now expiring, so a lot of 25 year old Skyline R32's are popping up for sale on Craigslist (I live a few hours from the Canadian border, so I see their Skylines for sale), and they are/ will be in a few months eligible to register in the United States. There's bone stock ones that have been daily driven by responsible adults, and then heavily modded ones. It's kind of crossed my mind- selling my Eclipse and buying the car of legends. The GT-R. The right-side-driver Paul Walker car. Most of them have fewer miles than my Eclipse. But then it pops in to my mind, "is it really worth it?" Are these cars really that special? Or is there just a hype train because of Fast and Furious? I just want some opinions on the R32's. I want to hear what people think. Are the Skylines really all that, or are they over popularized? Even if they are over popularized, are they still bitchen cars? Would you sell your soul for one? The floor is open.

I'd trade my Eclipse for one all day. But then I'd need a beater car because no way am I going GT-R on salted roads

Yes, I'd trade for a GT-R in a hot second. They're special. But I wouldn't want to daily drive one either, so it would need to be a second car. Plus there would be concerns about parts availability.

You should google "Doug Demuro R32" & then read from there.

I would NOT trade my Eclipse for one personally. They are the kind of car that requires knowledge of mechanics and stuff that I just don't have. Also imagine parts for that car.. I can't stand being without my car for a few hours. Having to wait weeks for shipping and paying USD prices on top of that.. Nightmare!

You DON'T have to wait weeks for parts? Places like Canadian Tire and Napa can't even order in most of our stuff.... (I've played around on their computer system at Canadian Tire)

And hell, even a parking brake cable is special order

Even my flippin' Mitsu dealer doesn't have anything in stock most of the time!

Is it really?? Perhaps I'm just used to my Volks... I remember we only had to order one thing, I think it was a coil pack. Took a few days that's it. Our family mechanic always seemed to have everything readily available for that car.

Hahah if that ain't true... My dad said I had monthly dates with Glenn (our mechanic). Ultimately decided that a monthly car payment would be a wiser investment.

VW parts are very universal between their vehicles. The Eclipse has a lot of unique parts. Also for every Eclipse sold I'm sure at least 10 Jettas have been sold, lol. My town has 3 Eclipse, and hundreds of Jettas

A GT-R wouldn't be my first choice, but sure, I'd drive that.

The R32 was the greatest iteration, simply because it had no true rivals and dominated the class. But the competition quickly caught up and by the R34, it was fighting to remain competitive. I honestly don't believe in the hype of those cars and truly think they're overrated, mainly because of the films that have over glorified them. Yes, they were very advanced for their time, but you can't out engineer a heavy chassis. The brakes and tires (at least in stock form) couldn't handle the job of getting it around a track consistently fast and after a few laps, the lightweight cars would pick it off around every corner.

Martino has also been quoted as saying "The MKIV Supra is the most overrated car ever."

The R32 feels to me like a true sports car. Granted, the one I worked on was modified but the layout was good to begin with. Driver seat and distance to everything was perfect and efficient. Performance really goes without saying. Its alot more minimalist and performance oriented than the R35, which although is still a performer, is getting a bit more bloated with luxury items.

Also very true lol. Don't get me wrong, the 2JZ is a great engine and is more than capable of putting down big power as the internets are well aware, but I've never seen a Supra on a road course that dominated the field. They suffer from much the same problem as GT-Rs. They're heavy.

If there's one import that I feel didn't get the respect it deserved, it's the NSX. It was dialed in by Senna himself on Suzuka in Japan. Anything that has been graced by his hand is gold.
