Mobil 1 synthetic = fail

checked my engine oil and found black residue on the dipstick, turns out it's breaking down. I only had it for maybe 1700miles,
I haven't really ran my car hard since the oil change, maybe a few spirited drives.

I've never had a problem with Mobil syn... and everything you read about it is pretty good!

IT is the only thing I use in my bikes.

Call the manufacturer and describe the problem. Something else may be in there causing it to break down.

I've been using that stuff for years. Perhaps what you are seeing is the oil "cleaning" out all the old stuff you used to use in your engine. I've taken apart a lot of high mileage Mitsubishi engines, and I know which ones have used synthetic versus ones that have just use conventional oil.

how do you KNOW that the oil is breaking down??

It's been years since the look, feel, or smell of an oil was a decent indication of it's 'health'.

You should change it again with the same type oil and see if it does the same thing.

What oil did you use before?

Royal Purple...for boy racers that buy into the hype man.

You talk to anybody that has been working with cars for awhile, race teams, speed shops...they will all say they same thing...don't believe the hype of Royal Purple. Total BS.

everyone here is right, royal purple is just over hyped, not used by any of the race teams - the only good thing royal purple has is a marketing team

amsoil, mobil1 all up there

The good and bad thing about that is... I use RP in my car , I use Valvoline in my SV, but I use Moble1 Motorcycle racing oil in my Honda.... I wish I could find test for that stuff!

Much depends on the additive package that is still in the oils.

About a year ago the EPA mandated a huge reduction in certain additives for oils intended for gas powered engines. Some package components were reduced by as much as 75%.

A lot of people have started using diesel oils like Shell Rotella in their gas powered engines. Diesel oils are (so far) not affected by the EPA ordered additive reductions.

There is a lot of google-info available on this.

None of this changes the emotional attachments people make with certain brands though.

Well as you can tell I am not attached to any one oil.

I use RP, Moble1, Castrol, and Valvoline.

Because no one Ever hears about that stuff and people purchase based on hear say and tv commercials. People like mobile 1 because nascars have it so it must be good...or mobile give free oil and pays millions for them to use only their oil. People buy royal purple because that's what chip foose so other tv shows use. It's all the same shit. There's numbers proving one thing over another but it all comes down to the same thing you pour in your car an throw out next mounth.

Should we start a thread about which gas is better too? In that case I'm a 76 man myself. It's oil.. I know it's important.. But y swear by one brand so strongly??

Royal purple, mobile 1, castrol all do the same thing. Lubricate ur motor, other parts. I don't believe the royal purple hype either. I can honestly say that because I've used both mobile and royal. No difference.

I doubt you would be able to "drive" your car with either oil and tell a difference. It is all in the testing.

And once again... Did you just ignore the link that HondaHunter posted?

I swear... I don't believe people can read something like that and say... oh it's just all marketing hype. I'm smart enough not to believe it. But I bet most of the people that don't believe a test of oil, with proof right under their nose, believes the government when they say that Alkata(misspelled I know) bombed the twin towers, even though we have been given no hard proof about such.

I would be a whole lot more satisfied if the review came with actual videos and from someone reputable and preferably someone who doesn't take bribes to promote a product.
+ that article is a little dated, some of the oils on there don't even exist anymore.

It would be sweet if Jay Leno did a review on what is the best motor oil, or something of that caliber

But you are right, I take back whatever I said about royal purple - I didn't do any lab testing on it, so it's all speculation at this time.

Al-Qaeda a lil help Anyways Jeep is right your not gonna notice when your driving your not gonna notice for few years until you have to break the engine down to fix something and you have a lotta shavings, scarring, and sludge in your engine. I'm not saying a better oil will stop these things, but it will minimize these things more.

Hmmm I was refering more towards the 2g which had close to 200k miles before I tore it down and rebuilt... *Oh and after inspecting the engine during the re-build, it coulda ran easily without the rebuild....Just preparing for a turbo later on.

Go ahead and run your 2$ walmart oil for 100k and tell me if theres a problem then
