Trunk rattle thanks to crappola Fosgate sub

Ehh... go figure. You've got a sub. And it's not even a Quizno's.

The issue:
There are two ways you can approach the issue, mainly involving the subwoofer enclosure. Now the enclosure isn't the "crappola" piece, IMHO. (The enclosure is pretty decent, it's the sub that's sub-par. But that's besides the point.) The issue is that the sub enclosure is rattling against the plastic trunk panels and the frame (of your beloved car).
The solution(s):
  1. Go to your hardware store of choice (Toys-R-Us) and buy LOTS of foam padding. Use that to your heart's content. If you're the type, you can even use it to pad your insufficient crotch lump / bra fill
  2. Go to Walmart and hit up the crafts section. The sub enclosure rattle can be easily solved using adhesive foam panels (typically letter-size) along the knitting / embroidery section. I used the same for my license plate. Or if you're really that much of a surist, polyurethane cell foam in 1" thickness can also be had for dirt cheap in the same section, though at that I might be inclined to say you probably like it in the psych ward.
Now if you're really enterprising and want to make like you're truly scientific in your approach (and spending), go get yourself some egg crate bedding underlays and start filling the open spaces and tight crevices that could cause sound resonance and rattling. That's an extra tip from me that'll hopefully eliminate your heavy spending on Crap-mat and Dung-o-Mat (pun indeed intended)

FYI, the hatch trunk panel is secured adequately enough by the use of plastic fasteners instead of metal ones. This is a most considerate improvement on the part of Fosgate/Mitsu engineers in that you won't have to worry too much about hatch rattle... lest you broke it trying to figure out how to get rid of your pr33ty stock spoiler..

NP Glad that helped!

The same adhesive-backed foam pad I had recommended for use with aftermarket spoilers can be used for eliminating any rattle. Wrapping wires, padding plastic and various interior panels/pieces, and for creating no-rub surfaces.

Both these items are available at Walmart. Like I had mentioned above, in the crafts section. Certainly lighter and cheaper than dynomat, and in great quantities can dull down any chassis/road noises.

What do you mean? How to apply it onto the sub?

When you free the sub box, you'll see where it rubs onto the trunk panel, in various spots. Put strips of the adhesive padding at those points. You shouldn't need to do so at the bolt points - just make sure you torque them down tightly (hand tight).

It might be a good idea to use strips of the foam liner and adhesive-backed foam over signal and electrical wires in that area, where they might vibrate against the chassis or other plastic pieces.

Sorry - I don't have reference pics

Another good sound deadening material for large scale projects can be found at Home Depot, it's called Ice and Water Shield. It is an adhesive matting that comes in rolls. It would be good to have a friend or two help with this because it is extremely sticky and if you're doing large sections it is difficult to manage. The end results are pretty good though (and you dont need to worry about ice or water I'm guessing).

Maybe someone else has done this recently and can share. I'm still a little foggy myself as to what actually happened.

Good idea with the foam and all but that's seems like a lot of extra work. All I did is turn the sub all the way up with some rap music playing and put a towel underneath of the sub on the side facing the passengers and not the trunk. As the sub beats you can move the towel around until you don't hear the raddle. It a free way of solving this problem in less than 5 minutes

Just this past week I've been having a terrible rattle from the sub. It's only happens when it's actually bumping. Idk if it's busted or what...it still hits hard but you can hear it rattle in between the thuds. Sorry I'm no audio expert so idk the correct terminology. Anyone have any helpful insight...I want good sounding music again

Its possibly blown.
When my 1st one blew, it would still hit hard, but rattle like crazy! ( only when bumping)
most likely its 1 coil blown....( its a dual coil sub )

you can check by turning up the volume, then go put your head near your sub, if you hear a sharp crack/pop, then its blown....if you wanna take the grill off, then push somewhat lightly, on the sub, in the center, while its bumping.... if the pop/crackle goes away with some slight pressure, then its a blown coil..... or snapped coil lead.... ( you may notice your sub try to hit really hard when you push on it.... its cause your makeing the wire (thats broken) make contact again.)

if your still under warranty, take it in to the dealer.... if not, check the for sale threads, or ebay.... or maybe its time to upgrade to a dual voice coil shallow mount sub, to go in that enclosure.

no problem man,

a "shallow mount" is a thinner sub.... that will fit the oem enclosure.

I think you can put a reg sub in, but you may need to use a spacer, to make the sub fit...( most subs are to thick, the back/magnet hits the inside of the enclosure, makeing the top of the sub sit up, off the enclosure surface.)

Theres a few threads about what subs other members used and worked...

your oem sub, is dual voice coil...( more powerfull then a reg single voice coil sub) and your oem amp is set up to run a dual voice coil sub...( its the way its wired inside the sub enclosure) so if you get a aftermarket sub, youll prob want a dual voice coil sub.....( there more money, but deff worth it, you can wire it different ways to get more out of it.)

I'm pretty sure your oem sub is running at 2 ohms...( pretty powerfull, as apposed to your standard 4 ohm...)
If you decide to go with a aftermarket amp, you want to make sure its 2 ohm stable... ( I'd make sure its 1ohm stable too, for future upgradeing)

That goes for the sub too.... youll want at least 2 ohm stable... 1 ohm stable could be a lot of money...
