right but they want to charge just to listen to it because if it needs adjustment its not covered its prolly normal and i just had them do it not to long ago. and i meant my guide says 8 and 12 for the intake and exhaust valves so i think thats right.

they want to charge you to open the hood and listen??? Take it somewhere else. If you just had it done then I'm sure it's fine...my problem is the fact that we have two different specs in the service manual and honestly, I don't honk that the .008" and .012" are correct...my moneys on the .004" and 008" being right...and if that's the case, then it's no wonder why yours are so loud. Someone needs to call MMNA and open a case file and get the spec investigated to get the proper info...maybe I'll call tomorrow...

Ok, I heard back from them...they said that the .008" intake spec was right. So, I guess that would mean that the .008 and .012 for the GS are correct as well...

EclipseJunky will become famous soon enough
Hate to bring up this topic but:

I bought my car at 45,000 miles, I don't think they were adjusted at the 30,000 mile mark. I called the dealership today and they told me it's going to be a $350-$500 dollar fix. Is this anywhere near accurate? I feel a bit raped at that price for something like this, when my timing belt change is $600 dollars.

They will look at it for me for free, and listen, but that is an outrageous quote, I would assume?

Edit: Only reason I called is because they seem to be getting a bit louder, when I first bought the car it didn't even make the sound.. Then I remember being able to hear the lifter noise when I opened the hood but thats all, now I can hear it inside the cabin of the car.

The gs is a whole different ballgame, much easier to do...

If I remember right I was quoted 460 or so for the whole 30k service...I think the valves portion of that was around 275-325 or so...

That's what i use as well... I had a shop check the valves a couple of months ago, so i really dont know... The car runs strong, just rough idle sometimes, but still it worries me...

^^^ Honestly, that doesn't sound like valve noise to me...it sounds much "heavier"...like rod or piston heavy...

Does the sound "hit" faster when you rev the engine up?

have someone tape it while you increase the RPM's...see if it gets faster or not...

it really doesn't seem fast enough to be a rod

By that thinking then it's not fast enough to be a valve either...

It's definitely engine speed related if it goes faster as the RPM's increase.

It's hard to say what it is on the net like this...but it sounds like a rod or a piston slapping to me.

gspower is a jewel in the roughgspower is a jewel in the rough
your symptoms sounds just like my fathers truck
he would acclerate and it would get louder, then stop
as soon as he would idle though the sound would come back, a little louder
on the way to the dealer the entire assembly just blew..POW!
the dealer blamed it on the oil filter, they said that it was cheap and decayed over time, allowing metal scraps from the oil filter to entire the assembly, causing a few cylinders to be starved from oil due to clogging

Right after I got headers, I started noticing this tick. Whether or not it was because I became more mechanically interested, or not. But my car has a little ticky noise from the injectors.... Take a stethoscope to the motor to find the source. Or what ever the little instrument is to finely listen in.

Possible issue related to this thread

I have 2006 GT manual. I changed my plugs this weekend and while I had the air intake off I noticed what seemed to be burnt oil on ininside. I also noticed some oil around the plug's threads. I have notice a burning smell on occasion a few days before I replaced the plugs. This worries me and I was wondering if anyone might have any suggestions on what this could be. A friend of mine mentioned valve rings, and I checked the PCV valve, it seemed a little gunked up so we cleaned it out and everything moved freely in it afterwards. My hope is to get the engine back to spec and possibly to a little forced induction. I'll save the request for input on that for the proper thread.

Thanks in advance for any input.

I've noticed this ticking sound in my GT as well. Goes away just about instantly when I press on the gas. I'm assuming that is the ticking we're saying is probably normal?

Good, now I'm not worried. I've noticed a small tick, tick, tick, tick since I got my car. One guy was like, oooh, that could be costly to fix, and then proceeded to plug his brother's and his little off the books car work that they do. Figured I'd check on this first, and I'd say based on what you guys are saying that it's the lifters. It's not an obnoxious ticking or anything, just a light tick, tick, tick, so I think we're good!
