Oil light coming on

Ok so about 2 weeks ago I was driving and my oil light came on after driving on the hwy for about 15 min. and came to a stop. I checked the oil level and it was full (2nd dot). So i went to the dealership the next morning and had them look at it. It took about 4 hours until they said it was the oil pressure switch. They said it was the problem so I took my car and went about my day.

About a week after, the light came on again. Now the light only comes on when im below 800 RPM. Above that its off. I'm not trying to waste 3 hours at the dealership again for a 10 dollar switch.

The mechanic there said it wasn't the oil pump since it wasn't making any weird noises like like valves tapping. Hopefully he's right.

Any ideas about what the problem may be?

below 800rpm your oil pressure would be at it's lowest. My guess... oil pressure sensor.

Sorry, dealership is pretty much your only choice since they've already looked at the problem once. If you take it somewhere else you'll lose the free service the dealership now has to provide.

Is the car running hot? Are you the first owner of the car? Was the oil changed every what ever mileage? How old is the oil in it now? Did the engine ever over heat that it may of turned the oil into varnish?

Im the second owner, the car has 40k on it. Since i've had it it hasn't overheated at all. From the records/carfax , it was pretty well maintained. Scheduled maintenance done at proper intervals and oil changes all done at mitsu dealer.

I forgot to mention, when I brought it to the dealer the first time, he replaced the oil pressure switch and the light did not come on at all. 2 weeks later is when it came on again.

I notice that If i drive slow and dont revv the motor past 3k the light wont come on. But once I get on the hwy and do like 60+, when I stop the light comes on. I've been around cars for quite a while and i never seen anything like it....im just lost as to what it could be.

ok so i left my car with mitsu for a few days to check out the issue. Turned out to be the oil pressure switch...

^^Usually valve tap can be heard throughout the rpm range. It'll get louder as you revv. The tapping noise that you hear, depending on the volume and intensity, can either be general engine noise, injectors spraying, or the valves.

If you keep your oil level maintained and healthy there's a chance it could be your oil pump. If it does it when its hot that may be a sign of too light of an oil weight. Check your using the proper weight (5W-20) or consider using a slightly heavier weight.

I don't recommend using those fixes in a bottle to try and alleviate the problem. They can gunk up the motor because it will thicken the oil considerably.

Usually when it is your oil pump, your oil light will be coming on because the pump isn't sending enough pressure. On the 4cyl the pressure switch is right in the head so you get a better idea of whats getting starved. On the 6cyl its right next to the oil filter. kinda harder.

Also visually inspect the camshaft just by looking into the oil cap opening and see if there is oil there, or some unusual color or burns.

Hope this helps a bit.
