I learned the hard way just how illegal it is.

Changing any part of the exhaust in this car is illegal. If not by the state then the federal law will still make it illegal

It has to be OEM parts. intake is fine, egr bypass is not, too much work on the intake side (spacers, tb, bypass) then makes it illegal, f/i illegal unless it came on the car.

There are ways of getting things done without having to do all that with a couple of extra 100$ bills.

That's how we do it in CA.

Anyways, the reason headers and alot of other parts are illegal is because they won't pass the "visual inspection" even if you do have a super restrictive CAT that is perhaps flanged into the mid pipe that'll make you pass the SMOG portion of the test.

Again, states are different, but many states are now requiring that intakes be C.A.R.B. approved. They're using the California Air Resources Board for certification of proper fitting of parts and also that they won't affect the emissions system greatly if at all. AEM and Injen intakes are a great example of C.A.R.B. legal parts.

You are right though, ANYTHING that messes with the Catalytic converters or exhaust system period besides a muffler will throw you into that nice little "illegal" mode.

Then again, think of how many cars on the road are probably running more illegal than you!

Now, Nitrous Oxide systems are legal to have installed on a car. They have ZERO effect on the emissions output of the vehicle when they are just installed. Now, they're classified as "Off Road Use Only" systems too. This doesn't mean you can't have it installed, it purely means that when you're normally driving around, you're supposed to have the system disengaged, and the bottle either not in the car, or the feed line not hooked up to the bottle.

When you are transporting the bottle, you are supposed to display the below placard. Not displaying it and transporting a non-flammable compressed gas can get you in alot of trouble.

I learned that lesson the hard way, but at least the cop explained the rules of it and how to be safe and legal with it.

synthetic is on a distinguished road
keep the stock parts and swap it in for emissions, then swap it out once you've passed
a friend of mine in eurpoe has to do that, he retunes his subie and puts on the stock exhaust system every 2 years just to pass emissions, then heads back to his shop and swaps it all back and drives it until the next emission test.
it's a lot of work, but if you want to keep those parts in use, might be something to consider

Unbelievable!!!!! I am just a few miles North of you in NC and we have a yearly inspection. They even put the anal probe up the tailpipe (proof aliens are among us!). I have a real cat that is flanged on both ends that I swap out with my racing cat. I haven't had any issues with having headers or other items. They even test the tint on the windows and every inspection station has the light meter to do it with. What a PIA every year and to hear just south of me they have nothing.

i try to keep my car legal on the road :-\ even though it ruins some fun.
i want to tint all the windows but don't want to deal with the tickets.
luckally no emissions testing in alberta so i can pollute all i want. pat_08_spyder is about 3 hours north of me and has no cats, its stanky riding behind him but the extra bit of power sure makes up for the stench.

Sounds like you need to move a little south. Shit you see old beat up clunkers driving down the road that look like they are spraying for mosquitoes. I think we quit doing yearly inspections in 95 or 96

Hummmm I wouldn't think it would be that hard since you already have SC tags. You would have to pay late fees and shit but seems like you could use the old address if you still have a SC drivers license.

OceanStateTuning has a spectacular aura about
I'm a state inspector here in RI, I also work at a performance shop so most of our customers are performance oriented. In RI only cars pre OBDII (1995 and older) need to get the sniffer on the dyno. Cars that are obdII we just plug in, if there are no codes then it passes the emissions part of it. For safety, If the car is spotless inside and out and has wheels where we can see the brake pads usually we just take them over a few bumps in the parking lot, pull them in, look at the pads and maybe take a glance underneath. If the car looks like the owner doesn't take care of it then we will most deffinitally put it in the air and try and find something. Headers and such passes, if we notice it doesn't have a cat and its obdII then we might say something depending how the customer is. I don't usually let tint fly unless it is a very good regular customer.

Catalytic Converter

Will make it look like it has a cat as long as your o2 simulators actually work, they will probably let it fly emission wise.

I'd suggest going to either a performance style inspection shop or small gas station, Places that sell performance parts usually the guys will let more things slide then others as long as the car is clean and it has no codes/cel.
I don't sell stickers or anything but I know of a few shops that do and they all seem to be gas stations with Spanish inspectors (Not that that means anything but it just seems like they do them more around here then anyone else) So yeah anyway good luck!

im so glad i dont have to deal with the stuff some of you guys do. cops dont care about the car unless its something really obvious and no sniffer test where i am. no code no problem passing.
