How To: install harness bar

The harness bar should take up about two to three hours of your day. You will need basic metric sockets and wrenchs, a small flat head screwdriver and a dremel with a cutoff wheel and drum sander. If you don't have a dremel you can use a pair of dikes and some sander. Grab a friend as well you will need an extra set of hands.

First i started with the cutting of the mesh in the seats for the harness to pass through. Please do not try to cut it out with the back cover still attached to the seat you will more than likely ruin the fabric. To remove the seat back you will push in on the plastic back and pull up at the same time. These clips are easy to break but cheap to replace about 90 at the dealer. There will be 5 with two located at the very bottom, two just below the mesh to each side of it and one at the center top. You will then take the cover and trim out most of the mesh with the dremel cutoff wheel or the dikes if you don't have a dremel. Then take your drum sander attachment or sandpaper and clean off the excess around the edge. You can finish the edges off with the door trim stuff for a better look but my seats were all scratched so i didn't care.

Now on to the main harness part of the bar you will first need to pop the covers off your seat belts and move the seat belt adjuster to its lowest position. Remove that bolt behind the cover for the seatbelts and its way to short to use with the harness installed so i went to the hardware store and bought the same size bolt just double the length. I believe it was a 5/8 with a fine thread 1 1/2 long. Make sure you get a grade 8 or higher bolt this isn't something you should be cheap on. Btw the harness bar came with universal hardware but only the washers were useful. Your going to take that bolt and put two of the smaller spacers on first then the belt followed by spacer the harness bar and another spacer. The spacers come with the kit and are basically oversized washes that are a quarter inch thick.

Now do that for both sides and in order to get the covers for the belt back on you have to dremel the inside of them out to fit the bigger bolt head.

should look this when the center crap is removed. You can snap them back on and the main bar is complete

Next is the support tubes for the main bar which the brackets for these need to be wrenched all the way in the tube to be short enough. Just be aware this are reverse threaded and need to be tightened counter clockwise.

While you were at the hardware store the first time you need to pick up a 3/8 fine thread by an inch and a half with a 3/8 x 1/2 inch spacer this was not included with the kit. You will then take the bolt put it through the bracket from the main bar with the spacer after then the down brace followed by a nylon locking nut.

For the bottom mounts i got seat belt brackets out of a 78 ford f100 custom truck. You can use any similar bracket just make sure its not a cheap shelf bracket

You now need to remove the bottom half of the rear seat by pulling up firmly. You need to take off the two rear seat belt bolts they are 17mm. Then put the brackets under the original ones as pictured and bolt the bar to the bracket.

If you want the rear seat in then you would put the bars through the seat holes before you bolt them to the brackets and then push the seat back into place.

You will need to get some seatbelt buckels to stop the annoying beep. I got a set that fit the eclipse from a 05 galant.

Link for harness bar: http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewi...w=170582538252
It says for a 240sx but is universal and is the exact one i ordered.

Awesome thread! It might be nice for everyone if you put a parts list of what you bought at the hardware store, etc. Just a thought!

I wouldn't get some cheap off brand unless they are just for show. Your talking about something that's suppose to keep you safe i never seen aci ones but if your going to do any racing with them i would at least get sfi certified belts. Go to jegs or summit racing and they have alot to pick from

Aight thanks for the tips/info after my next check ill keep an eye out for some street legal harnesses. Most likely go with a similar brand as yours but I am thinking a four point harness instead.

If you snip the buzzer wire you will still have the flashing light. Best thing to do is just get a buckle or see if Brian j could make a custom bypass

These look nice, however I'm a bit concerned with the ebay harness bar. This is something thats going to be subjected to retarded amounts of G force during a hard hit.
Idk much about it, but I'd be leery of picking up a no name harness bar.

I was too but its actually really heavy duty pretty much as sturdy as the progress rear sway bar hence the joke sticker on it. The bar paired with good grade 8 hardware with thread locker is sturdier then you would think.

5/8 with a fine thread 1 1/2 long. Make sure you get a grade 8 or higher bolt,3/8 fine thread by an inch and a half with a 3/8 x 1/2 inch spacer. And the bracket can be anything similar just make sure they are heavy duty?
Wanna make sure that is all correct before i hit the hardware store up. Should have this installed later on today.

Yeah the hardware is correct take Ur seat belt bolt with you and home depot has the little bolt tester. The brackets were from another vehicle but you can use something similar and the buckle was to get rid o the seat belt chime when using the harness
